How many days of postpartum bleeding is normal?

I believe many of my friends have heard of the phenomenon of postpartum hemorrhage. This phenomenon is a common disease in obstetrics and gynecology. However, if this disease is not treated in time when it occurs, it can easily endanger the patient's life. Many women in my country die from this every year. So some women say that is it normal to have a few days of postpartum bleeding? So in response to this issue, let’s take a look at the following content.

Lochia refers to the secretion discharged from the vagina after childbirth, which contains blood, necrotic decidual tissue and mucus. In the first few days after delivery, the lochia is abundant and bright red in color, which is called red lochia. After 1 week, the color of the lochia becomes lighter, which is called serous lochia; about 2 weeks later, the lochia becomes light yellow, which is called white lochia and lasts for 2-3 weeks. In short, lochia should stop when it is one month after delivery. When the uterus is not in full recovery, or there are residual placenta, fetal membranes or infection in the uterine cavity, the amount of lochia increases, the duration is prolonged, and there is a foul odor.

Vaginal bleeding exceeding 500 ml within 24 hours after delivery of the fetus is called postpartum hemorrhage. The main causes of postpartum hemorrhage are uterine atony, placental factors, soft birth canal laceration and coagulation dysfunction. Among them, uterine atony is the most common, accounting for 70%-80% of the total postpartum hemorrhage. The clinical manifestations are rapid and heavy bleeding from the birth canal, or continuous small amounts of bleeding. In severe cases, shock may occur. It may also be accompanied by dizziness, fatigue, drowsiness, loss of appetite, diarrhea, edema, milk stagnation, hair loss, chills, etc. It is recommended that you go to a regular hospital for treatment. If you do not take it seriously, it will cause many harms to your body and even endanger your life.

Regarding the question of whether it is normal to have a few days of postpartum bleeding, I believe everyone knows the answer after reading the detailed introduction above. Generally speaking, you should go to the hospital for treatment on the first day of postpartum hemorrhage, especially when the amount of bleeding is too heavy, which can easily pose a life-threatening threat to the mother. Therefore, if pregnant women find themselves in this situation after giving birth, they must pay attention.
