Can I eat breast milk if I have mastitis?

Mastitis is one of the biggest problems that bothers female friends. After mastitis occurs, the breasts will be damaged, causing symptoms such as redness, swelling, hardness, and turbid secretions. Long-term non-treatment will cause physical complications. Mastitis seriously affects the patient's movements, and if you don't pay attention it will cause breast pain. Let us now understand whether the baby can eat breast milk caused by mastitis?

Breast milk

Once mastitis is discovered, breastfeeding needs to be stopped and active and timely treatment is needed. During the treatment, feed the baby artificially first, and then breastfeed after the disease is completely cured.

Mastitis symptoms

Early stage: At the beginning of mastitis, the patient will have swollen and painful breasts, which is worse during breastfeeding, poor milk secretion, the presence or absence of breast lumps, slightly red or no red skin, or accompanied by general discomfort, poor appetite, chest tightness and irritability, etc.

Suppurative stage: The local breast becomes hard and the lump gradually increases in size. It may be accompanied by high fever, chills, general weakness, dry stool, rapid pulse, ipsilateral lymph node enlargement, and increased white blood cell count. An abscess may often form in 4-5 days. The breast may be throbbing, the local skin may be red, swollen and translucent, the center of the lump may become soft, and there may be fluctuation when pressed. If it is a deep breast abscess, the whole breast may become swollen, painful, and have a high fever, but the local skin redness, swelling and fluctuation are not obvious. Sometimes there may be several abscess cavities in one breast at the same time or one after another.

Mastitis care

It is not advisable to stimulate lactation too quickly after delivery. Postpartum nutritional supplements are not necessarily more is better. Fish soup, meat soup or chicken soup that helps with milk production must be consumed in moderation according to the amount of milk secretion. Because some new mothers' mammary ducts are not yet unobstructed when they start to secrete milk, and newborns have weak sucking ability. If a large amount of milk is secreted, it is easy to cause milk swelling and lumps, causing pain to the new mother. Therefore, after giving birth, you should start eating small amounts of foods that promote milk secretion.

During the pus-forming stage of mastitis, you should eat less fishy soups that have the effect of "stimulating milk" to avoid aggravating the condition. It is advisable to eat more vegetables and fruits that have the effect of clearing heat, such as tomatoes, green vegetables, loofah, cucumber, mung beans, fresh lotus root, kumquat cake, etc. Kelp has the effect of softening and dispersing lumps, so you can eat more of it. At the same time, keep your mood happy.

Pay attention to diet adjustment: eat light and nutritious food, eat more fresh vegetables and fruits, such as tomatoes, loofah, cucumber, fresh lotus root, orange, etc. Avoid spicy, irritating, meaty and greasy foods.

Don't wear an underwire bra. A mother's milk will often flow out inadvertently, and the breasts will sag due to fullness of milk. At this time, new mothers should not wear bras with underwires. It is best to wear special nursing bras to prevent bras with underwires from squeezing the milk ducts and causing local milk congestion and mastitis.

The above article describes a detailed introduction to mastitis milk. After suffering from mastitis, new mothers should first treat their own physical illness, and then breastfeed their babies. They should also pay more attention to their daily diet and try to eat a light diet. They can eat some lean meat to supplement nutrition. Keeping a good mood is conducive to the recovery of the disease.
