Is it normal to have bloody vaginal discharge after menopause?

"The soft fingers touch the lips like lotus. The beautiful girl lowers her head and her skin is as white as ice." Everyone will grow old, especially women. When women get older, with the aging of various body functions, they are no longer as pretty as lotus, and their skin will also deteriorate. Especially for women after menopause, they age particularly quickly, both internally and externally. After menopause, women not only stop having normal monthly bleeding, but also have other secretions, such as leucorrhea. Leucorrhea is a sticky white or colorless liquid that flows out of the vagina of female mammals. It is a mixture of secretions from the Bartholin's glands, cervical glands, endometrium, exudate from the vaginal mucosa, and desquamated vaginal epithelial cells. So let’s understand whether it is normal to have blood in leucorrhea after menopause?

Causes of bloody vaginal discharge after menopause

1. Acute vaginitis

The main symptoms of acute vaginitis include vaginal discharge with an unpleasant odor, watery or purulent texture, and a significant increase in volume. Severe infection may cause vaginal spotting.

2. Cervical polyps

One of the manifestations of chronic cervicitis is cervical polyps, and married women are more likely to suffer from cervical polyps. One-third of cervical polyps have no obvious symptoms, so it is easy to miss the best time for treatment, but they can be discovered through examination. The main symptoms of cervical polyps are leucorrhea with an odor, yellowing, and blood streaks. There will be a small amount of bleeding after sexual intercourse, and some patients' bleeding amount is even similar to menstrual blood. Some patients' leucorrhea will be yellow, and a few people's leucorrhea will be accompanied by an odor and blood streaks.

3. Senile vaginitis

Vaginal discharge increases significantly and becomes light yellow in color. In severe cases, the vaginal discharge becomes bloody and purulent.

4. Severe cervical erosion

Usually, patients with mild cervical erosion do not have any obvious symptoms, while patients with moderate cervical erosion will have a significant increase in leucorrhea. Depending on the cause, leucorrhea may present in different conditions, with different colors, smells, shapes, and degrees. It may appear yellow pus or white, or milky white mucus. The main symptoms of severe cervical erosion include yellow, sticky and odorous leucorrhea, accompanied by vulvar itching, menstrual pain, lumbar pain, and bleeding during sexual intercourse. Cervical erosion can cause irregular vaginal bleeding and contact bleeding, and the inflammation may spread to the pelvic cavity. Once it spreads to the pelvic cavity, low back pain, abdominal pain, dysmenorrhea, and sacral pain will occur. The pain will worsen during bowel movements, menstruation, and sexual intercourse. If cervical erosion is not treated in time, it is likely to affect normal fertility and affect women's physical and mental health.

5. Cervical cancer

There will be a small amount of bleeding during sexual intercourse and increased vaginal discharge.

6. Endometrial cancer

The main symptoms include irregular bleeding, prolonged menstruation in non-menopausal women, and postmenopausal bleeding in menopausal women.

In short, after menopause: if there is blood in the leucorrhea, even if there are no symptoms such as abdominal pain and fever, it must be caused by illness. If this phenomenon occurs in postmenopausal women, it may be a precursor to a serious illness. Do not take it lightly. It is better to see a doctor in time. Pay more attention to hygiene in daily life and seek timely treatment for any illness to stay away from gynecological diseases.
