Is it correct to sleep on the left side during pregnancy?

During pregnancy, women are always very careful about their every move. Not only that, family members will also take extra care of the pregnant mothers. From diet to daily routine, and even every posture when sleeping will be restricted. Everyone wants to have a healthier baby, so they start to take good care of it during the pregnancy stage. For a pregnant woman, what kind of sleeping position will be better for the baby? Is it correct to sleep on the left side during pregnancy?

Lying on the left side is the best sleeping position for pregnant women, especially in the third trimester. Pregnant women should sleep in the left side position, which can reduce the right rotation of the uterus and relieve insufficient blood supply to the uterus, which is beneficial to the growth and development of the fetus and the delivery of the pregnant woman. Pregnant women with lower limb edema should raise their legs when lying on their left side to facilitate blood circulation and reduce edema.

Pregnant women sleeping position:

There are three main sleeping positions: supine, sideways, and prone. For ordinary people, as long as they sleep comfortably, it doesn’t matter what sleeping position they use. However, for pregnant women, things are not so simple.

1. When lying on your back, the enlarged uterus compresses the inferior vena cava, affecting blood circulation and causing edema or varicose veins in the lower limbs and vulva. It also reduces the amount of blood flowing from the lower limbs to the heart, causing ischemia and hypoxia in the brain. Therefore, pregnant women should never lie on their backs.

2. Prone position is rarely used by normal people. It is neither realistic nor possible to ask a pregnant woman to lie prone with a big belly.

3. There are two types of side sleeping: right side sleeping and left side sleeping. Lying on the right side will cause the uterus to rotate to the right to varying degrees. This will put the ligaments and mesentery that maintain the normal position of the uterus under tension. The blood vessels in the mesentery are stretched, affecting the blood supply to the fetus, causing chronic fetal hypoxia. In severe cases, it can also cause fetal suffocation and death.

4. Then, pregnant women can only lie on their left side. In fact, lying on the left side is the best sleeping position for pregnant women in late pregnancy. Because of this position, the right-rotated uterus can be turned to an upright position, thereby reducing the resulting fetal position and delivery abnormalities. It can also prevent the uterus from compressing the veins of the inferior cavity, increase the amount of cardiac blood output in pregnant women, reduce edema, improve the blood perfusion of the uterus and placenta, help reduce premature birth, and prevent the uterus from compressing the kidneys, thus benefiting the growth and development of the fetus and eugenics.

During pregnancy, the sleeping position of pregnant mothers will also affect the development of the baby. Combining the points mentioned above, sleeping on the left side during pregnancy is still very beneficial to the baby's growth. If you want to have a healthier and cuter baby, it is best to follow this. but. During the pregnancy stage, there is no need to dictate what pregnant mothers should do. They also need to make appropriate adjustments according to their own habits.
