3. Central nervous system causes. The central nervous system includes the brain and hypothalamus, which both command the pituitary gland and control ovarian function. When the central nervous system is stimulated, changes in ovarian function cause amenorrhea. Sudden amenorrhea may occur due to a broken heart, loss of a loved one, or failure at work.
