What is mastitis during breastfeeding?

Many new mothers may not know much about mastitis during breastfeeding, right? In fact, these are all closely related to the mother! Lactation mastitis often occurs after the first delivery. According to the development process of the disease, it is divided into the following two types: sedimentary mastitis and suppurative mastitis. Mastitis during lactation, also known as subacute mastitis, is a suppurative infection of the breast. Almost all patients are primiparas, and the disease usually occurs 3-4 weeks after giving birth. The specific clinical manifestations are redness, swelling, heat, and pain in the breast, the formation of local lumps and cysts, increased body temperature, and increased white blood cell count. Before the cyst is formed, the main treatment is to promote milk discharge through anti-infection, and after the cyst is formed, the main treatment is incision and drainage.

In addition, mastitis during lactation is mostly caused by blocked milk ducts, milk accumulation, direct invasion of bacteria, or bacteria invading the milk ducts from the nipple or nipple cracks and infecting the mammary lobules along the lymph node drainage tubes. Therefore, in order to prevent mastitis during breastfeeding, medical care is also very important! For the sake of your physical and mental health, expectant mothers please read this carefully!

Symptoms of mastitis during breastfeeding

Often mastitis during breastfeeding does not attract many people's attention because they are not aware of its symptoms. In some cases, mothers feel occasional breast pain due to some minor problems after giving birth, which do not attract enough attention. So, let’s take a look at the symptoms of mastitis during breastfeeding.

In fact, when mastitis occurs soon after breastfeeding, symptoms of systemic food poisoning such as high fever and shivering often occur. The breast of the affected limb increases in size, becomes hard locally, the skin becomes red, and there is tenderness and throbbing pain. If the part becomes loose in a short time, it means that a cyst has formed and needs to be incised and drained. The axillary lymph nodes of the affected limb are often swollen and the white blood cell count is elevated.

Breast pain, local lumps and swelling are the initial symptoms; if the condition is not treated promptly, chills, shivering or a sudden rise in body temperature may also occur, sometimes reaching over 39 degrees. The symptoms of acute mastitis are not necessarily the same for everyone, and there are different manifestations. If a mother has some inflammation and has taken antibiotics, she may not have any symptoms. If not properly handled and treated, the diseased breast is likely to fester, even damage the internal tissues, and in severe cases, breast atrophy may occur.

If you have any of the above symptoms, you need to pay attention and go to the hospital for examination when necessary. You should always pay attention to your body changes to ensure your physical and mental health!
