Is it urine or amniotic fluid that smells fishy?

When pregnant women reach the late stage of labor, they will worry all day long, after all, they may go into labor and give birth to a baby at any time. General signs of labor include bleeding, abdominal pain or water breaking. If any of these signs occur, it is recommended to go to the hospital as soon as possible and prepare for giving birth. For pregnant mothers who are giving birth for the first time, they cannot tell whether the water breaking is urine or amniotic fluid, so sometimes they ignore this problem. So, is the fishy smell urine or amniotic fluid?

1. Differentiate by discharge volume

In fact, if women want to distinguish urine and amniotic fluid well, they can identify them based on the amount of urine discharged. First of all, the amount of urine discharged is basically not large, there will only be a small amount of urine on women's underwear, and the urine will not flow out continuously, the amount of discharge is very small. But amniotic fluid is different. If the position of the fetal head blocks the cervical opening, the amount of amniotic fluid discharged may be very small, but it flows out continuously. If the position of the fetal head moves slightly, the amount of amniotic fluid flowing out will be relatively more. This is also the best way to distinguish the two fluids.

2. Differentiate by color

If you want to distinguish amniotic fluid from urine, you can also distinguish them by color. Basically all amniotic fluid is colorless and transparent, and it will remain in this state when it is discharged from the body. However, if it is mixed with a small amount of blood and discharged from the body, the amniotic fluid will turn pink. However, urine is basically light yellow, and there is no change in color when it is excreted from the body. Women can also distinguish it by this point.

3. Differentiate by smell

In fact, if you want to distinguish urine and amniotic fluid, you can also distinguish them by their smell. Amniotic fluid basically does not have any smell. Of course, some women will have a little blood mixed in with the amniotic fluid when it is discharged, so there may also be a little fishy smell. However, if it is urine discharged from the body, it will basically have a faint smell of ammonia, so you can also completely distinguish the two liquids from this point.

When women reach the late stage of pregnancy, because they are close to giving birth, their bodies will experience many changes and abnormalities. At this time, women should observe their physical condition at all times. Once they find amniotic fluid being discharged from the body, they must be alert because it is a sign of impending delivery. Of course, if it is difficult to distinguish between urine and amniotic fluid, the above three methods can be used to distinguish whether it is amniotic fluid or urine.
