Is it good to take progesterone for irregular menstruation?

Menstrual irregularities are also a serious problem that troubles many women. If a woman's body is in a state of menstrual irregularities for a long time, it may cause more serious reproductive system diseases and even affect a woman's normal reproductive function. There are many ways to treat irregular menstruation in clinical medicine. Is it good for the body to inject progesterone to treat irregular menstruation?

In fact, although progesterone is effective in artificially adjusting the menstrual cycle, it must be used with caution. There are many reasons for delayed menstruation. Progesterone is not a panacea. Its abuse is not only ineffective, but may even have adverse effects on the human body.

As a hormonal drug, progesterone is a prescription drug and must be used under the guidance of a doctor. Currently, progesterone is available in two forms: oral and injectable. Its preparations used to be mostly artificially synthesized, but now they are mainly purified from natural sources. Since it increases the level of progesterone in the human body, it is most suitable for amenorrhea caused by insufficient progesterone secretion. However, there is nothing we can do about menopause or amenorrhea caused by other reasons.

Currently, when encountering women with amenorrhea in clinical practice, as long as the condition is not caused by elevated prolactin, they are generally given progesterone as a trial treatment.

After using progesterone, if menstruation comes, it means that there is a progesterone deficiency and you can continue to use it; if menstruation does not come, it may be amenorrhea caused by other reasons, including mental stimulation, weight loss, excessive exercise, pituitary tumors, premature ovarian failure, endometrial destruction, etc., which require further examination and treatment.

Therefore, it is wrong to use progesterone blindly and for a long time when the diagnosis is unclear.

Although progesterone is a substance that can be secreted by the human body, if used improperly it will not only be ineffective, but will also interfere with subsequent laboratory tests and affect further treatment. In addition, as a hormonal drug, progesterone also has certain side effects, which may cause weight gain, sodium and water retention, and in severe cases, edema. It should be emphasized that if amenorrhea is caused by pregnancy, if women take progesterone without knowing it, it may have adverse effects on the fetus.
