Traditional recipe for treating scanty menstruation

The causes of scanty menstruation can be both real and false. According to traditional Chinese medicine, scanty menstruation can be divided into four types based on the cause: blood deficiency, blood stasis, kidney deficiency, and phlegm and dampness.

1. Blood deficiency type

Symptoms: scanty and light-colored menstruation, or quick menstruation, empty and painful lower abdomen, dizziness, palpitations, sallow complexion, pale tongue with thin coating, and thready and weak pulse.

Treatment method: Nourish blood and regulate menstruation.

Prescription: Bazhen Decoction with added ingredients.

Ingredients: 12 grams of Codonopsis pilosula, 12 grams of Astragalus membranaceus, 12 grams of Poria cocos, 10 grams of stir-fried Atractylodes macrocephala, 12 grams of White Peony Root, 9 grams of Angelica sinensis, 6 grams of Chuanxiong, and 12 grams of Rehmannia glutinosa.

2. Kidney deficiency

Symptoms: scanty menstruation, bright red or light red in color, soreness in waist and knees, heel pain, or dizziness and tinnitus, pale tongue with little fluid, and deep and thin pulse.

Treatment method: Nourish the kidney, nourish blood and regulate menstruation.

Prescription: Guishen Pills with modifications.

Ingredients: 12 grams of Cuscuta seeds, 10 grams of Eucommia ulmoides, 12 grams of Lycium barbarum, 9 grams of Cornus officinalis, 9 grams of Angelica sinensis, 10 grams of Rehmannia glutinosa, 12 grams of Chinese yam, and 10 grams of white Poria.

3. Blood stasis

Symptoms: scanty menstrual flow, purple-black color with clots, abdominal distension and pain that is resistant to pressure, pain is relieved after the blood clots are discharged, dark purple tongue, or with petechiae, and stringy or wiry pulse.

Treatment method: Promote blood circulation, remove blood stasis and regulate menstruation.

Prescription: Taohong Siwu Decoction with modifications.

Ingredients: 9 grams of peach kernel, 6 grams of safflower, 10 grams of angelica, 6 grams of Chuanxiong, 9 grams of red peony root, and 9 grams of raw rehmannia.

4. Phlegm and dampness

Symptoms: scanty menstrual blood, light red in color, thick or mixed with mucus, obesity, chest and abdominal fullness, fatigue. The tongue is fat, with teeth marks on the edges, the tongue coating is white and greasy, and the pulse is stringy and slippery.

Treatment method: eliminate dampness, clear phlegm and dredge the meridians.

Prescription: Cangfu Daotan Pills.

Ingredients: 12 grams of white Poria cocos, 10 grams of French Pinellia, 6 grams of dried tangerine peel, 3 grams of roasted licorice, 9 grams of Atractylodes, 9 grams of Cyperus rotundus, 10 grams of Arisaema consanguineum, 9 grams of Citrus aurantium, 6 grams of ginger, and 9 grams of Liushenqu.
