What causes postpartum convulsions?

Convulsions are manifestations of involuntary movements and pathological phenomena of neuromuscular diseases, manifested as involuntary contractions of skeletal muscles. The following are common clinically: convulsions, tonic spasms, myoclonus, tremors, choreiform movements, athetosis, torsion spasms, fasciculations, and habitual tics. Traditional Chinese medicine believes that the main causes and pathogenesis of convulsions include internal accumulation of heat and toxicity, disturbance of wind-yang, penetration of wind-toxicity into the collaterals, and deficiency of yin and blood. It is commonly seen in brain diseases, infectious diseases, poisoning, intracranial injuries, syncope, eclampsia, postpartum spasm, infantile convulsions, tetanus, rabies and other diseases. When the clinical diagnosis of a disease characterized by convulsions is still uncertain, convulsions to be investigated can be used as a preliminary diagnosis and dialectical treatment can be carried out.

Epilepsy is a characteristic brain disease that is a complex, paroxysmal, transient central nervous system dysfunction caused by abnormal super-synchronous discharges of brain neuron cell groups. The location, intensity, and frequency of the discharge of brain neuron cells vary, as do the symptoms and types, including whether they affect the left and right hemispheres of the brain. However, convulsions of the limbs, foaming at the mouth, rolled eyes, cyanosis of the face, screaming, and incontinence are typical epilepsy symptoms.

Suggestions: This is an abnormal phenomenon. First, we should rule out whether it is caused by postpartum cramps, and secondly, we should rule out whether it is caused by brain disease. A consultation with the obstetrics and gynecology department and the internal medicine department is required. First, a CT scan should be done to rule out brain disease as the cause, and secondly, to rule out upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Go get a checkup as soon as possible.

What to do if you have postpartum cramps

Alternating between ice and heat: Alternating between cold and hot compresses can also relieve cramping problems. First apply ice to your stomach, then use a hot water bottle to apply heat, alternating between hot and cold to relieve discomfort.

Drink ginger tea: You can also add some ginger to tea. Since it is an effective anti-inflammatory drink, drinking some can relieve cramps and discomfort.

Gently massage your belly: You can ask your partner to help you gently massage your abdomen. Place your hands on your belly button and move them in circles to stimulate contractions and firm the uterus.

Try breastfeeding: When you breastfeed, your body releases the hormone oxytocin, which causes the uterus to contract and reduces bleeding. What's more, breast milk is the best source of nutrition for babies.
