How many days does it take for amniocentesis to produce results?

Amniocentesis is a relatively important examination. For example, it can determine whether the fetus has Down syndrome. Culture is still required after the puncture, so the results cannot be obtained immediately. It takes about 1 to 2 weeks after the amniocentesis to make a clear diagnosis. During the amniocentesis, you should also understand some precautions and do advance examinations.

How many days does it take for amniocentesis to produce results?

Because the cells extracted from amniocentesis must be cultured before they can divide to a sufficient number, this process usually takes about 7-14 days. In order to reduce the worries of expectant mothers, some hospitals also use direct fluorescence in situ hybridization of interphase cells, which can obtain results on whether the chromosomes are abnormal in 2-3 days.

The results of amniocentesis are usually available 2-3 weeks after the operation, but it depends on the schedule of the hospital. Generally speaking, if there are no side effects for more than two weeks after amniocentesis, there will be no danger. The main purpose is to prevent leakage of amniotic fluid, accidental injury to the fetus and amniotic cavity infection. It is recommended that you do not worry. After the operation, pay attention to the fetal heart rate and movement, and whether there are bleeding at the puncture site, discharge, or fever, and maintain a regular life.
