Will progesterone decrease in ectopic pregnancy?

We know that when progesterone is relatively low, it will have an adverse effect on pregnant women and is also an important cause of miscarriage. Through investigation, it was found that ectopic pregnancy does not cause progesterone to drop. Pregnant women may find that their progesterone levels are low during prenatal check-ups. At this time, regular treatment should be carried out in time, and more foods that promote the increase of progesterone should be eaten in daily life.

Will progesterone decrease in ectopic pregnancy?

Experts point out that there is currently no data to prove that there is any necessary connection between low progesterone and ectopic pregnancy. There are many reasons for ectopic pregnancy in women, such as the following:

1. Reproductive tract infection. Women suffer from gynecological inflammation, such as vaginitis, cervicitis, etc. The above gynecological inflammations may ascend to infect the fallopian tubes and cause fallopian tube inflammation. After an abortion, the body's own defense mechanism is affected, and the fallopian tubes are susceptible to bacterial infection, leading to inflammation of the tissues around the fallopian tubes, which increases the chance of ectopic pregnancy.

2. Multiple artificial abortions. Relevant data show that women who have experienced multiple miscarriages have a higher chance of ectopic pregnancy than the average woman.

3. Improper contraceptive method. If women choose the wrong contraceptive method or lack self-protection awareness, and do not have long-term contraceptive measures, the abuse of contraceptives will increase the risk of ectopic pregnancy. Contraceptive pills affect the levels of estrogen and progesterone, which in turn affects the peristalsis of the fallopian tube wall, ciliary activity, and secretion of epithelial cells. If the hormones are out of balance, it will affect the delivery of the fertilized egg and cause fallopian tube pregnancy.

4. Addicted to smoking and drinking. Women who have the habit of smoking and drinking will also increase the risk of ectopic pregnancy. Because nicotine and alcohol can affect the movement of fallopian tube cilia and induce ectopic pregnancy.

What is the role of progesterone in early pregnancy

1. Progesterone inhibits uterine contractions. Some people believe that progesterone can change the permeability of the uterine muscle cell membrane to ions, causing the membrane to be in a hyperpolarized state, thereby reducing the excitability of the uterine muscle and at the same time reducing the sensitivity of the uterine muscle to various stimuli (especially oxytocin). Therefore, the pregnant uterus does not undergo violent and progressive contractions, the embryo is not affected, and the pregnancy is maintained. Based on this, progesterone is commonly used in clinical practice to maintain pregnancy.

Some people hold the opposite opinion, believing that although the experiment proves that progesterone inhibits the excitement of uterine muscles, it is an in vitro condition and the dose used in the experiment far exceeds the physiological concentration. In addition, in the treatment of threatened abortion, progesterone was found to be as effective as placebo using a double-blind method.

2. Progesterone maintains the decidual reaction. Decidual cells are transformed from endometrial stromal cells and contain glycogen granules, which provide nutrition to the blastocyst. Injecting pregnant mice with "rabbit anti-mouse decidua serum" can cause miscarriage, indicating the importance of decidua in maintaining pregnancy. Removal of both ovaries from animals with pseudopregnancy decidual reaction can cause necrosis and liquefaction of the decidua. If exogenous progesterone is given, decidual degeneration can be prevented. It can be seen that progesterone is necessary to maintain the decidual reaction.

3. Progesterone suppresses immune response. Some people have found that when certain tumor cells are transplanted into the uterine cavity of animals, only in animals injected with progesterone will the tumor cells not be rejected and implant into the uterine wall, indicating that progesterone can suppress the immune response.
