How many days before and after menstruation is the safe period

We all know that for women, they not only have menstrual periods, but also safe periods, ovulation periods, and luteal phases. Therefore, as a woman, you must know how to calculate these dates. Especially for some married or partnered women, they should know how to calculate their safe periods to effectively avoid pregnancy. Otherwise, having an abortion after pregnancy is very harmful to the body. So how many days before and after menstruation are safe periods?

How to calculate the safe period

1. Cervical mucus method

This method of calculating the safe period is based on the basic common sense that female endocrine secretions increase during ovulation, and the safe contraceptive period is determined by observing the mucus changes in the endocrine secretions under a microscope. The examination should be conducted in the gynecology department of a hospital, which has a higher accuracy.

2. Basal body temperature method

Basal body temperature refers to the body temperature of a healthy person after waking up in the morning. It is generally the lowest body temperature of the day. For women of normal childbearing age, body temperature rises immediately after ovulation and continues until the start of the next menstrual cycle. Use the changing pattern of a woman's basal body temperature to find her ovulation period and abstain from sexual intercourse 3 to 4 days before and 5 to 7 days after.

3. Middle pain method

There is pain in the lower abdomen between two menstrual periods, which is exactly the time before ovulation, which is called intermediate pain. An expert investigation stated that 97% of middle pain is felt before ovulation. Therefore, if you feel middle pain, you can judge that ovulation will occur within 24 hours, but only less than 20% of women experience middle pain.

4. Observation of changes in vaginal secretions

Women's vaginal secretions change regularly during the different stages of the menstrual cycle. During ovulation, the amount of mucus increases, the vagina feels damp, the mucus becomes clear, and the mucus can be stretched into threads, up to 10 cm long. The last day this mucus lasts is generally the ovulation period. No sexual intercourse during the first 3-4 days and the last 5-7 days.

What is the chance of getting pregnant during the safe period?

In most cases, there is no ovulation during the safe period. If pregnancy occurs during the safe period, it is mostly due to unexpected ovulation.

1. Having sex during the safe period will not normally result in pregnancy. If a woman's menstrual cycle is stable and not affected by other factors, the 7 days before and 8 days after menstruation are generally the safe period. The closer the sexual activity is to the first day of menstruation, the safer it is, and the farther away it is, the more dangerous it is, because the possibility of ovulation is positively correlated with it.

2. For women whose menstrual periods are not accurate, how to calculate the safe period is a very difficult problem. In addition, women's ovulation will be affected by many factors, such as early or late ovulation. This is what we usually call the inability to estimate the safe period normally. In any case, the safe period does not mean it is absolutely safe. If you do not want to get pregnant, it is recommended that women take appropriate contraceptive measures, such as taking emergency contraceptive pills or condoms.

3. The safe period is relative. Generally speaking, the chance of pregnancy for people with regular menstruation is less than 10%. So under normal circumstances, the chance of pregnancy during the safe period is still relatively small, so there is no need to worry too much.
