How many days of bleeding is normal after medical abortion?

The average number of days of bleeding after the fetal sac is expelled after a medical abortion is 18 days.

If someone is still bleeding for more than 18 days, it may be that the decidua is not completely detached, affecting uterine contraction and hemostasis; or the fetal sac is not completely expelled, leading to incomplete abortion; a small number of patients are infected after medical abortion surgery, resulting in endometrial inflammation.

If there are residual objects that are not cleared from the uterus, vaginal bleeding will be prolonged, thereby increasing the chance of infection. If ascending infection is caused, resulting in blockage of the fallopian tubes, pregnancy will be affected.

Because the bleeding time after medical abortion is long and the cervix relaxes, it provides opportunities for bacterial growth and retrograde infection. Therefore, if vaginal bleeding lasts for more than 7 days, antibiotics should be taken routinely for 3-5 days to prevent infection.
