Why do I have a headache during my period?

Menstruation can be said to bring a lot of inconvenience to women's lives. The most common situation is that women will have stomach pain during menstruation. That kind of pain cannot be relieved by taking medicine or massage, and it will only disappear when the menstruation is completely over. There are also some women who experience headaches in addition to dysmenorrhea during menstruation. So what causes headaches during menstruation? Let's analyze the specific reasons below.

reason

Why is the menstrual cycle related to headaches? Clinical studies have shown that this may be related to changes in the concentration of estradiol (a female hormone) in serum. Due to the physiological characteristics of women, the concentration of estradiol in serum decreases before and after menstruation, causing intracranial and extracranial blood vessels and uterine blood vessels to be more sensitive to certain factors such as serotonin and other substances, thereby causing changes in vascular tension and causing headaches in some patients who are sensitive to this. After menstruation, the concentration of estradiol in serum returns to normal and the patient's headaches can also be relieved. There is another possibility that estrogen (including estradiol) can stimulate the secretion of prolactin, thereby directly or indirectly stimulating the secretion of prostaglandins. Prostaglandins act on blood vessels, causing vascular contraction and dilation. This change also shows cyclical changes due to the influence of estrogen, thereby triggering headache attacks.

Causes of headaches

endocrine

70% of migraines occur around the time of menstruation in women, and nearly three-quarters of migraine sufferers are women. Therefore, there is reason to believe that hormone fluctuations are one of the important reasons for this phenomenon.

Menstrual headaches are related to changes in serum estradiol (a female hormone) concentration. Before and after menstruation, the concentration of estradiol in serum decreases, causing changes in vascular tension and causing headaches in some patients who are sensitive to this. After menstruation, the serum estradiol concentration returns to normal and the patient's headache may be relieved or disappear.

However, menstrual headaches, which are common in clinical practice, are closely related to endocrine disorders. In real life, women will inevitably encounter some unpleasant things or some difficult problems at work. In addition, the intense life and work pressure in modern cities put the brain nerves in a state of tension. Mental fatigue, lack of exercise, lack of sleep, and some women even go without eating for a long time to lose weight. These bad living habits may lead to endocrine disorders and then cause premenstrual syndrome.

From the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine, menstrual headaches can be called menstrual headaches. It is caused by long-term bad living habits or emotional instability, which will lead to long-term accumulation of toxins in the body. Toxins enter the blood vessels, causing vasodilation, thus causing headaches.

Allergic food

In daily life, some foods can cause migraines in people with weaker immunity. Some foods can even cause changes in the blood vessels or nerves in migraine sufferers. Experts have provided us with information in this regard, mainly as follows:

Dairy products: including skim or whole milk, goat milk, cheese, etc.;

Chocolate: Chocolate is not only fattening, it also contains tyrosine, which is the main suspect in causing migraines;

Meat: including beef, pork, fish and turkey.
