What are the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome?

What are the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome?

Adult women have a special visitor every month, that is, menstruation. When menstruation comes, she may bring some extra "gifts" that women don't want, causing women to have various uncomfortable symptoms. This situation is medically called premenstrual syndrome. The manifestations of premenstrual syndrome may be different for each woman. Today, let's take a closer look at the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome.

Symptoms of PMS

1. Menstrual rash

2-3 days before menstruation, the skin will itch, herpes, erythema or purpura will occur. The rash often occurs on the face, chest, back and limbs. With the end of menstruation, the rash and itching symptoms will heal without treatment. For those who suffer from severe menstrual rash and itching that affects sleep, desensitizing drugs such as cyproheptadine and chlorpheniramine can be taken.

2. Premenstrual syndrome and premenstrual toothache

Some people will experience sudden and severe toothache when eating cold dishes or drinking cold drinks one or two weeks before menstruation, which will stop in an instant. This is because before the menstrual cycle, the blood vessels in the dental pulp and periodontal mucosa expand and become congested due to the weight, and when the dentin is stimulated by cold, contractions occur. This is not a dental disease, so no treatment is required.

3. PMS and headaches during menstruation

Modern medical research has confirmed that the imbalance of estrogen and progesterone secretion in women during menstruation is the root cause of menstrual headaches. Oral administration of ergotamine, caffeine, oryzanol or Yuanhu analgesic tablets or Jiawei Xiaoyao pills all have certain effects.

4. PMS and herpes labialis during menstruation

This is related to the body's reduced resistance during menstruation and the activity of latent herpes viruses in the body. It usually occurs 1-2 days before menstruation or 2-3 days during menstruation, and is more common on the lips, but can also be seen on the eyelids, around the nostrils, and on the edges of the labia. You can apply mulberry juice on it, but do not scratch it to avoid secondary menstrual syndrome infection.

Causes of PMS

1. Imbalance in the ratio of estrogen to progesterone

It may be caused by relatively high estrogen levels and relatively insufficient progesterone levels; it may also be caused by abnormal tissue sensitivity to progesterone. Under normal circumstances, progesterone promotes the excretion of sodium and water in the distal renal tubules, while estrogen causes water and sodium retention through the renin, angiotensin II, and aldosterone system. Therefore, an imbalance in the ratio of estrogen to progesterone can cause signs such as weight gain.

2. Vitamin B6 deficiency

Vitamin B6 can promote the elimination of excess estrogen in the body and moderate emotions and behaviors. Vitamin B6 deficiency may cause premenstrual syndrome.

3. Mental factors

Some patients have prominent mental symptoms, and mood swings and mental stress can aggravate the original symptoms.

4. Endorphin Theory

Since changes in endorphin levels can affect mental and neurological factors, intravenous administration of endorphins can increase prolactin concentrations. Animal experiments also show that antidiuretic hormone increases after endorphin administration. The endorphin inhibitor naloxone can change the secretion of luteinizing hormone after acting on endorphin receptors, and β-endorphin changes with the menstrual cycle, so it is proposed that premenstrual syndrome is caused by changes in endorphin concentrations during the luteal phase.
