B-ultrasound picture of fetal cleft lip

Cleft lip and palate is commonly known as cleft lip. The baby is born with lips and nose connected together, like a rabbit's mouth, hence the name cleft lip. Nowadays, medicine is relatively advanced, and deformed fetuses can be detected through prenatal examinations. If a deformed fetus occurs, pregnant women usually discuss with their families whether to keep the baby or not. This is also a responsibility to the fetus and an act of being responsible for themselves. Naturally detected cleft lip and palate can be treated surgically in the later stage.

1. Ultrasound picture of cleft lip in fetus

1. In the late pregnancy, it is impossible to detect cleft lip and palate of the baby through ordinary B-ultrasound. A four-dimensional color ultrasound can be used to see whether the baby in the belly has any deformities in appearance. Generally, a B-ultrasound can be performed after 24 weeks of pregnancy, that is, after six months of pregnancy, to check whether there is cleft lip and palate.

2. Theoretically, cleft lip and palate can be detected through B-ultrasound under appropriate conditions. The major fetal malformation screening during prenatal examination includes the examination of fetal facial deformities, which is usually carried out between 18 and 24 weeks of pregnancy, so everyone must pay great attention to it. Due to the influence of factors such as the thickness of the pregnant woman's abdomen, the posture of the fetus, the characteristics of the ultrasound instrument, the ability of the doctor, etc., ultrasound may not be able to detect all cleft lip and palate. Data show that the probability of detecting cleft lip and palate through prenatal ultrasound is 26.6%~92.5%. These newborns can be treated surgically after birth.

2. Causes of cleft lip and palate

1. Genetic factors: Marriage between close relatives is most likely to produce deformed fetuses. Some patients have similar deformities in their direct or collateral relatives. Approximately 20% of patients with cleft lip and palate can be traced to a genetic history.

2. Infection and injury: If the mother has been infected with viruses such as influenza, rubella, or suffered some kind of injury in the first two months of pregnancy, it may become the cause of cleft lip and palate.

3. Endocrine abnormalities: Neurological or harmful factors of pregnant mothers cause endocrine abnormalities, such as severe mental stimulation during pregnancy, external damage to the body, etc.

4. The pregnant mother suffers from chronic diseases such as anemia, diabetes, severe functional impairment, etc. during pregnancy.

5. Taking some medicines during pregnancy: such as sedatives, anti-epileptic drugs and hormone drugs, etc.

6. Pregnant women are exposed to excessive amounts of X-rays during pregnancy.
