Is it normal if the vaginal discharge smells fishy?

Leucorrhea is a liquid that is secreted from the female reproductive tract and discharged through the vagina, which is beneficial to the human body. All healthy women have leucorrhea. Normal leucorrhea is white, paste-like or transparent, egg white-like, elastic and has no odor. It keeps the vagina at a certain humidity, which is very helpful in preventing the invasion of bacteria. Is it normal if my vaginal discharge smells fishy? Let us find out through the following.

Fishy leucorrhea is a disease with leucorrhea odor. Usually, fishy leucorrhea is partly due to vaginitis, which is caused by Haemophilus vaginalis. The leucorrhea has a special fishy odor. In addition, it is accompanied by symptoms such as vaginal pain, itching, burning, and vulvar moisture.

Leucorrhea with a fishy smell is common in bacterial vaginosis, also known as nonspecific vaginitis. This disease is caused by a mixed infection of Gardnerella vaginalis and some hypoxic bacteria. It can be transmitted through sexual contact and has a higher incidence among people with promiscuous sexual relations. The prominent clinical manifestation is increased vaginal secretions and a fishy smell. This is because of the special smell that the secretions give off. Whenever sexual intercourse or activity occurs, the release of odor is promoted, and the odor is particularly obvious. Because there are a large number of amines in the vagina, the pH of vaginal secretions also increases. When a speculum is used for vaginal examination, it is found that the secretions in the vagina increase, are grayish white, and very sticky, but the inflammation of the vaginal wall is not obvious.

If a woman's leucorrhea has a fishy smell, it is caused by bacterial vaginosis. Bacterial vaginosis is a disease caused by the massive multiplication of multiple pathogenic bacteria in the vagina. Bacterial vaginosis mainly leads to the imbalance of the vaginal ecological balance, putting the vagina in a pathological state.

Is it normal if my vaginal discharge smells fishy? After reading the above, you must have known that a fishy smell is not normal. When you find that your vaginal discharge has an odor, you should first pay attention to whether it is a physiological change. If the changes in the amount and properties have exceeded the physiological range, especially if you are in menopause or postmenopause, when you are prone to tumors, you should see a doctor as soon as possible to find the root cause so that the disease can be discovered in time and given appropriate treatment. Do not try to take medication on your own, which will delay your condition.
