What causes vaginal discharge to be brown?

There is a special secretion in women's bodies - leucorrhea. This discharge is a normal part of the female body. Don't underestimate this substance. By carefully observing its color and density, we can understand a lot of health information that the body reveals to us. Recently, some female friends have come to ask whether it is normal for vaginal discharge to be brown. If it means there is something wrong with the body, then what kind of disease is it? Next, let’s take a look at the experts’ answers.

Experts say that leucorrhea is a secretion from the vagina, which is a mixture of vaginal mucosal exudates, cervical glands and endometrial secretions. If there is abnormal leucorrhea, it means that there is a problem with your health and you should go to a regular hospital for examination and treatment in time. The amount of vaginal discharge is often related to age, menstrual cycle and sexual activity. Women of childbearing age have more vaginal discharge during each menstrual period; women during pregnancy have more vaginal discharge; girls in love have more vaginal discharge. This indicates that the estrogen level in the body has increased, the cervix and vaginal wall have become congested, the exudate has increased, and the amount of leucorrhea has naturally increased. Menopausal women have low ovarian function, reduced estrogen secretion levels, atrophy of reproductive organ tissue, and less vaginal discharge secretion. Experts have concluded through years of clinical experience that the main reasons for leucorrhea being brown are as follows:

1. Coffee-colored leucorrhea should be a sign of acute vaginitis. Vaginitis is the most common inflammation of the female reproductive organs and can occur at all ages. The clinical manifestations of acute vaginitis include increased vaginal discharge, frequent urination, urgency, and pain when urinating. There are varying degrees of itching, burning, or pain in the vulva, and fever in the acute phase.

2. Brown leucorrhea should be a sign of cervical erosion. Cervical erosion is one of the local characteristics of chronic cervicitis and is also the most common gynecological disease. If women do not pay attention to sexual hygiene, they can directly bring bacteria into the vagina, infect the cervix, and cause cervical erosion. The clinical manifestations are often increased and sticky vaginal discharge, and occasionally purulent or bloody vaginal discharge may also appear. Low back pain, abdominal pain, and a feeling of heaviness in the lower abdomen are also often accompanied. Contact bleeding may also occur during sexual intercourse, and the appearance of odor is also very likely.

3. Beware of cervical polyps if you have brown leucorrhea. Cervical polyps are more common in married women. The clinical manifestations of women with cervical dysentery are a small amount of bright red spotting, or a small amount of bleeding after sexual intercourse, which is sometimes mistaken for "menstruation". The amount of bleeding in a few people may be similar to menstruation. Some patients may have yellow leucorrhea at ordinary times, most of them have an odor, or the leucorrhea contains blood, and it can also manifest as postmenopausal vaginal bleeding.

After reading the above experts' introduction, we already know clearly that coffee-colored vaginal discharge is an abnormal color and it must be a gynecological disease. Therefore, we would like to remind female friends that once the leucorrhea appears in this color, they should go to the hospital for timely examination and treatment. It must not be ignored to avoid unbearable pain and consequences.
