Diagram of the use of female enema

The enema should be used when you feel like having a bowel movement, because it will take 5-10 minutes for the enema to take effect, and you will be able to have a bowel movement easily next time you go. But for severe constipation, it will take longer to be effective, generally not more than 30 minutes. Therefore, patients should determine the time to use enema based on their own specific circumstances.

The front end of the enema is about 2.5 to 4 cm long. If the enema is squeezed in according to the traditional method, the enema will not be inserted deep enough and the enema will not be able to reach the dry feces and achieve its efficacy. Insert the catheter 20 to 30 cm and squeeze in the enema to allow the medicine to fully contact the dry stool. Combined with local massage, external force is used to promote the combination of the enema medicine and the dry stool, and the effect of the enema medicine in moisturizing the intestinal cavity, dissolving knots, and stimulating gastrointestinal function is fully utilized.

Dosage and usage of enema: puncture or cut the top of the container, apply a small amount of vegetable oil, slowly insert it into the anus, and then squeeze the medicine into the duodenum. Adults take one piece at a time and children take half a piece at a time. It can be seen that the daily usage of enema still depends on the patient's condition, but it is generally used when symptoms of constipation exist, and it can be stopped when the symptoms of constipation disappear.

Enema is not suitable for common

The ingredients of enema are generally vaseline and sorbitol, plus some other auxiliary materials. Its main principle is to use the hypertonic effect of vaseline or sorbitol to allow more water to penetrate into the intestine, soften the stool, stimulate the intestinal cavity, and reflexively cause a bowel movement.

In addition, Vaseline itself can also have a certain lubricating effect. Therefore, enema belongs to the category of stimulant laxatives, which is very similar to the principle of Coptis chinensis in traditional Chinese medicine.

The effect of enema is immediate, so it is often abused by patients with constipation. But in fact, the stimulating effect of irritant laxatives on the intestinal cavity is likely to cause patients to feel dependent on it, and develop a habit of not wanting to defecate without obvious irritation. As the use time increases, the intestinal cavity's sensitivity to irritation will become weaker and weaker, making it difficult for the enema to work effectively.

In clinical medicine, enema is mainly used for people with constipation and those who need quick bowel lubrication, such as bedridden patients and patients preparing for surgery. Pregnant women and children are especially not suitable for using enema.

Because enema may cause significant contraction of some tissues, it may lead to transient ischemia and inflammation in pregnant women. For children, because their intestinal mucosa is very delicate, the irritation of sorbitol will affect their digestive function.

When using the enema, remove the top rubber stopper, apply a small amount of vegetable oil, slowly insert it into the anus, and then squeeze the medicine into the duodenum. Adults take one piece at a time and children take half a piece at a time. The opening of the injection hose should be smooth to prevent scratching the anus or duodenum.
