Shocked! Most people misunderstand whether myopia patients should wear glasses for a long time

Distinguishing true from false myopia - don't wear glasses blindly

Pseudomyopia is a temporary, reversible myopia phenomenon caused by functional eye accommodation spasm. Epidemiological surveys show that the younger the age, the higher the incidence and severity of functional eye accommodation spasm, so the probability of pseudomyopia increases accordingly. This is why children and adolescents have to go to a professional ophthalmology hospital for mydriasis optometry for the first time. Through visual function training in professional and regular hospitals, pseudomyopia can be restored to normal! Once you blindly wear glasses, it will undoubtedly turn myopia from "fake" to "real" and it will be irreversible.

If you have true myopia, you must wear glasses

The first hazard of not wearing glasses: Vision declines faster

Wang Tingting, member of the Ophthalmology Technology Quality Control and Management Group of the Medical Technicians Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, a national second-level optometrist, and supervisor of optometry at the Aier Eye Hospital Affiliated to Wuhan University (Aier Eye Hospital Group Hubei Headquarters), explained: If you are myopic and do not wear glasses, it will aggravate eye fatigue and cause the degree of myopia to increase rapidly.

Clinical studies have been conducted on the effects of not wearing glasses and wearing appropriate glasses on the progression of myopia in patients with low myopia. The results show that myopia increases faster in patients who do not wear glasses. Therefore, it is recommended that patients with myopia of more than 50 degrees should wear glasses when seeing far away to improve the quality of retinal imaging.

The second harm of not wearing glasses: exotropia or exotropia, which is difficult to correct in adulthood

Zhou Chao, a member of the Medical Technician Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, a national first-level (senior) optometrist, and director of the optometry department of the Aier Eye Hospital affiliated to Wuhan University (Aier Eye Hospital Group Hubei General Hospital), said: In fact, when the human eye changes from looking far to looking near, there is an adjustment process, so that objects at different distances are focused on the retina and present clear images. The process of eye adjustment when looking at near can itself be regarded as a process in which the lens becomes convex, the refractive power of the eye is enhanced, and the focus point of the image moves forward.

Myopia is caused by excessive refractive power of the eye or excessively long eye axis, which causes light to focus in front of the retina. Therefore, when looking at close objects, the amount of accommodation required by myopic eyes without glasses is relatively smaller or even zero than that of normal eyes, and the corresponding convergence function is also weakened, which can easily lead to exotropia or exotropia.

How should you wear glasses?

1. Frame glasses or contact lenses - must be worn when looking far away, and whether to wear glasses when looking close should be based on the advice of a professional optometrist

The purpose of wearing glasses is to improve the clarity of retinal imaging. Therefore, as long as you use your eyes, you will need to wear frame glasses when looking far away.

Whether you need to wear glasses for close viewing is determined by the degree of refractive error and the state of visual function. You need to follow the advice of a professional optometrist to achieve the goal of wearing glasses scientifically.

2. Orthokeratology lenses: Wear them when sleeping, not when using your eyes, effectively controlling the increase of myopia

It is a pair of glasses that correct myopia while sleeping. It is a high-humidity and high-oxygen permeability lens with a special design of multiple arc segments on the inner surface. The wearing method is the same as ordinary contact lenses. The difference is that you only need to wear it for 7-9 hours at night when sleeping, and you don’t need to wear it during the day. It can restore clear naked eye vision for myopia within 600 degrees and astigmatism within 150 degrees. However, this lens has strict requirements on the eyes, and it is necessary to be examined and evaluated in a professional ophthalmology hospital to determine whether it is suitable for fitting.
