(2) Diet: There is no evidence that nutritional deficiencies can cause premenstrual syndrome, but poor eating habits can aggravate the symptoms. Recent studies have found that a reasonable diet structure can help relieve symptoms.

① High-carbohydrate, low-protein diet: It is currently believed that the hypoglycemia-like symptoms of premenstrual syndrome, such as increased appetite, irritability, nervousness and fatigue, are related to the effects of cyclical changes in estrogen and progesterone on glucose metabolism. It is reported that consuming a carbohydrate-rich and low-protein diet, or drinking more carbohydrate-containing beverages, can improve the mental symptoms of premenstrual syndrome, including depression, tension, irritability, fatigue, etc., when there are premenstrual symptoms. This opinion is contrary to the authoritative opinion of carbohydrate restriction and high-protein diet. However, recent studies on the relationship between serotonin levels in the body and carbohydrate preferences, as well as the discovery that carbohydrate intake can increase the brain's utilization of the serotonin precursor tryptophan, have revealed the biological rationale for the former dietary regimen.

② Salt restriction: Although there is no evidence to support that excessive salt intake is the cause of premenstrual syndrome, since increased salt intake will cause a significant increase in weight, it is reasonable to restrict salt intake to reduce water retention.

③ Limit coffee: Caffeine has been shown to be associated with the severity of PMS symptoms. Caffeine can increase anxiety, tension, depression and irritability, so PMS patients should avoid or reduce caffeine intake.
