Does every pregnant woman have to take glucose tolerance test?

Glucose tolerance is something that everyone knows, and our pregnant women will definitely know it, because it is one of the new items in the prenatal examination, but the editor has received some questions, what kind of pregnant women can not do glucose tolerance? Does every pregnant woman have to do glucose tolerance? This is the first time I have heard of this question, so I just want to collect relevant information, let's take a look together below!

Does every pregnant woman have to take a glucose tolerance test?

According to the latest pre-pregnancy and gestational health care manual in my country in 2019, it is recommended that all pregnant women who have not been diagnosed with pre-pregnancy diabetes and gestational diabetes should undergo a 75g glucose tolerance test when they first visit a doctor at 24-28 weeks of pregnancy and after 28 weeks of pregnancy, because high blood sugar levels can cause polyhydramnios, gestational hypertension, and diabetic ketoacidosis in pregnant women, and can cause macrosomia, fetal growth restriction, and fetal malformations in the fetus. If a pregnant woman has high-risk factors for gestational diabetes, such as being over 35 years old, overweight before pregnancy, obesity, polycystic ovary syndrome, a family history of diabetes, a history of unexplained adverse pregnancies, or finding that the fetus is too large or has too much amniotic fluid during pregnancy, it is recommended that these pregnant women have their blood sugar checked. If the blood sugar level is ≥5.1mmol/L, gestational diabetes can be diagnosed immediately without the need for another 75g glucose tolerance test, which not only reduces the pain of two blood tests but also reduces the cost for patients.

What pregnant women can avoid glucose tolerance test?

During pregnancy, many factors can cause glycolysis abnormalities, but many people do not have corresponding symptoms, and even their blood sugar is normal, so there is no corresponding concern. However, gestational diabetes can have a variety of adverse effects. Therefore, a glucose tolerance test must be done to detect whether a pregnant woman has hyperglycemia as soon as possible and provide specific guidance.

The 75g glucose tolerance test is used to check for diabetes during pregnancy, mainly to check the blood sugar level of the pregnant mother. There are two types of pregnancy combined with diabetes. One is pregnancy on the basis of existing diabetes, also known as diabetes combined with pregnancy. The other is that glycolysis is normal before pregnancy but diabetes occurs after pregnancy, which is called gestational diabetes. The prevalence of gestational diabetes in my country is 1-5%. In recent years, its incidence has been on the rise, accounting for about 10% of all pregnant women.

The best time for pregnant women to do glucose tolerance

OGTT internal red grape sugar screening is used to check for diabetes during pregnancy. It is usually done at 24-28 weeks, and the requirement is to avoid eating after dinner the day before. At least 3 days of continuous normal physical activity and a normal diet with a daily carbohydrate intake of no less than 150g are required before the OGTT test. Smoking is strictly prohibited while sitting during the test period. During the test, take 300ml of liquid containing 75g of glucose orally within 5 minutes. Don't take it too fast, drink it slowly, little by little, don't drink it in one gulp, and drink it within 5 minutes. Grasp the time of blood test well, check once on an empty stomach, check once one hour after taking the first sip, and check again two hours later, for a total of three times. For example, if you start drinking at 7:10 and finish drinking at 7:15, have your blood drawn again at 8:10 and 9:10 respectively. After getting the test results, you can go to the nutrition department of the hospital, and the doctor will give detailed guidance on the dietary structure of pregnant women.

Do you know clearly what pregnant women can do without glucose tolerance test? I think prenatal check-up is very important, including our glucose tolerance test, so it is best for our pregnant women to do relevant examinations regularly. I have heard of many cases of unsuccessful pregnancy without prenatal check-up, and I hope to give everyone a reminder!
