Causes of abdominal pain after IUD insertion

IUD insertion is a common contraceptive measure used by women in my country after giving birth. Compared with other contraceptive measures such as taking birth control pills and sterilization surgery, IUD insertion is less harmful to the female body and is also the most recommended method of contraception after marriage in medicine. However, after all, an IUD insertion involves implanting a foreign object in the body, and the body will inevitably have a rejection reaction, which can easily cause abdominal pain in female friends. So what are the causes of abdominal pain after an IUD insertion?

Abdominal pain after IUD insertion can generally be divided into the following three types:

1. Early sexual pain: This condition usually occurs during the IUD insertion process and within ten days after insertion, and is mostly physiological. When the IUD is inserted, the ring and the insertion device pass through the internal os of the cervix, which stimulates the internal os of the cervix and causes uterine contraction and spasm-like pain. It may also be caused by the patient's mental tension and sensitivity to pain.

2. Delayed pain: In this case, the pain usually lasts for more than 10 days. Generally, the local stimulation and uterine rejection reaction of the IUD can last for about 10 days. After that, the pain will gradually disappear as the uterus gradually adapts. Delayed pain generally indicates that the ring does not match the uterine cavity. The longer the pain lasts, the more likely it is that the ring is less consistent with the uterine cavity.

3. Late pain: This is pain that lasts for more than four weeks after the IUD is inserted. At this time, most of them are pathological and the cause should be further investigated. It may be infection, ectopic pregnancy, ring migration, deformation, incarceration, etc.

Generally speaking, IUD insertion will not have much impact on women's health, but after all, it is an object from outside the body, so it is inevitable that it will cause some adverse symptoms at the beginning. After a period of time, the adverse symptoms will normally disappear slowly, but if there is long-term pain, it needs to be taken seriously, as it may be a symptom caused by pathology.
