Dysmenorrhea is a common disease that troubles many women. In addition to causing discomfort and nausea, a recent study found that dysmenorrhea can even affect women's intelligence. Researchers at the University of Bath in the UK conducted computer tests on 52 women with dysmenorrhea and found that dysmenorrhea impaired their cognitive performance. The computer tests examined their ability to choose between competing tasks, their attention span and their ability to switch attention between tasks. Due to dysmenorrhea, the women tested had a shorter attention span, their performance became worse and their scores were lower. Lead researcher Dr Ed Keogh, from the Department of Psychology at the University of Bath, said pain of all kinds was extremely common and could have a significant impact on people's daily lives. Dr. Keogh said: "The results show that the effects of pain are not limited to sensory perception, but can even affect people's thinking ability." |
