Can I eat mooncakes during my period?

Some people say that you should eat more sweets during menstruation because sweets can prevent symptoms of anemia caused by heavy menstrual blood. It is okay to eat some sweets during menstruation because sweets can help expel dirty blood. When the Mid-Autumn Festival comes, there are all kinds of mooncakes. But can you eat mooncakes during your period? Do you know who can’t eat mooncakes? In fact, its concept is the same as cake, both are processed foods. Let’s find the answer together.

Mooncakes are a time-honored traditional snack of the Han nationality and a traditional festival specialty food deeply loved by the Chinese people. Mooncakes are round and eaten by the whole family, symbolizing reunion and harmony. They are a must-eat on the Mid-Autumn Festival. In ancient times, mooncakes were eaten as offerings during the Mid-Autumn Festival. It is said that the custom of eating mooncakes during the Mid-Autumn Festival began in the Tang Dynasty. During the Northern Song Dynasty, it was popular in the palace, but also spread to the people. At that time, it was commonly known as "small cakes" and "moon cakes". By the Ming Dynasty, it had become a common dietary custom for the entire nation. Today, there are more varieties and the flavors vary from place to place. Among them, Beijing-style, Suzhou-style, Cantonese-style, Chaozhou-style mooncakes are widely loved by people from all over China.

The fillings of mooncakes are mostly made of plant seeds, such as melon seeds, hawthorn, lotus paste, red beans, jujube paste, etc., which have certain health benefits for the human body. However, mooncakes contain a lot of oil and sugar, and those with duck egg yolk as filling are high in cholesterol. Overall, they are high-calorie foods, and diabetics and obese people should not eat too much of them.

Those who are not suitable to eat moon cakes:

1. Patients with cholecystitis and cholelithiasis should not eat too many mooncakes. Severe cases may cause an illness. Eating too many mooncakes may cause acute pancreatitis, a disease that develops rapidly and a small number of acute patients may die within a short period of time.

2. Patients with hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and coronary heart disease should never eat too many mooncakes. Because the sugar, fat, etc. in mooncakes can increase blood viscosity, aggravate heart ischemia, and even induce myocardial infarction.

3. Patients with duodenitis or gastritis. It is not conducive to the recovery of diseases and consumption should be controlled.

4. Patients with nephritis should avoid salty food. However, some mooncakes contain more salt, and you will often feel dry mouth and tongue after eating them. You are prone to drinking too much water, which increases the burden on the kidneys, aggravates renal hypertension, and is prone to edema.

5. Diabetic patients. Because mooncakes are high in sugar, eating too much can cause blood sugar to rise sharply and worsen the condition.

6. Infants and young children. Because the digestive system is not fully developed, it is difficult to withstand large amounts of high-sugar and high-fat foods. Be careful not to eat too much.

7. Since the elderly have poor digestion and absorption abilities, eating more may increase the burden on the spleen and stomach, causing indigestion, diarrhea and other diseases.

It seems that through the above introduction to mooncakes, there is no mention that mooncakes cannot be eaten during menstruation. However, mooncakes are processed foods that are high in sugar and calories. Even if you can eat sweets during your period, you should not eat too many mooncakes, otherwise it will easily lead to getting a sore throat and feeling unwell.
