"Girls who often stay up late playing mahjong suffer from otolithiasis"

Rushing to the hot search and causing heated discussion

25-year-old Xiao Li (pseudonym) loves playing mahjong and often stays up late to play. Last year, she began to experience transient dizziness, nausea and vomiting , which was very uncomfortable, but after a period of rest, the symptoms were relieved, so she didn't take it seriously. Recently, Xiao Li's "vertigo" recurred, not only dizziness and chest tightness, but also unable to walk.

The doctor diagnosed Xiao Li with otolithiasis . After learning about her experience before and after the onset of the disease, the doctor said that this might be related to her staying up late to play mahjong and fatigue. After the doctor and the machine repositioned the device, Xiao Li's symptoms were significantly relieved.

Why does the "little stone" in the ear shift and cause dizziness?

Otolithiasis, also known as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), refers to brief paroxysmal attacks of vertigo and nystagmus that occur when the head moves rapidly to a specific head position.

The most typical symptom of otolithiasis is vertigo , which often occurs when the body position changes (especially the head), and in most cases only lasts for a few seconds to tens of seconds, usually no more than 1 minute. In addition, some people may experience nausea, vomiting, lightheadedness, floating sensation, unstable balance, and vibration hallucinations.

The reasons for the loss of otoliths are usually related to the aging of the inner ear organs, abnormal calcium metabolism, vitamin D deficiency, osteoporosis, estrogen deficiency, high uric acid, etc. The treatment method is to "replace" the fallen otoliths through repositioning surgery.

Spring, especially around March, is the peak season for otolithiasis.

As the old saying goes, “Spring brings all kinds of diseases to the head.” Clinical data and medical research have shown that spring, especially around March, is the peak season for otolithiasis.

This phenomenon may be related to factors such as sunshine duration and hormone fluctuations . After a whole winter, people's exposure to sunlight is relatively short, resulting in insufficient vitamin D in the body and causing otolithiasis.

Theoretically, any factor that can cause otoliths to fall off may induce otolithiasis, such as changes in hormone levels, fluctuations in blood pressure and blood lipids, which can cause insufficient blood supply to the inner ear and lead to otolithiasis.

If you have 4 symptoms, you need to be highly alert:
Dizziness caused by otolithiasis can be identified from the following points:

1. Benign , that is, self-limiting, it can be relieved by itself in about a week, but the process of dizziness and nausea is very painful, and there is a risk of falling when going out;

2. Paroxysmal , that is, each attack lasts for a few seconds or tens of seconds, rarely more than 1 minute;

3. Positional , i.e. dizziness occurs when the head moves, such as when getting up in the morning, turning over in the middle of the night, the moment you lie down, when you raise or lower your head, and the dizziness disappears when the head is still;

4. Dizziness , that is, the feeling of being dizzy and the world spinning, may also cause nausea and vomiting, and the inability to walk.

People who are addicted to their phones or stay up late are more likely to be infected

Otolithiasis is more common among people aged 40 to 60, but in recent years, with the changes in people's lifestyles, otolithiasis has quietly "targeted" young people, among whom those who stay up late and those who spend too much time with their phones are high-risk groups.

The doctor explained: "This may be because everyone is under pressure, has poor sleep, is overly tired, and has a long-term bad living condition, which makes the small arteries in the inner ear prone to spasm and ischemia, thereby increasing the probability of otolithiasis. In addition, bad postures such as playing mahjong or playing with mobile phones with heads down aggravate the spasm of the blood vessels in the inner ear, making it easier for otoliths to fall off and cause the disease."

To prevent otolithiasis, it is recommended that you avoid staying up late, get enough sleep, and do not get up or turn over too quickly. Do not work at a desk for a long time or keep your head down to play mahjong or play with your phone. In addition, otolithiasis is easily induced by rapid changes in head position, so when bending, getting up, lying down, turning your head, etc., it is not advisable to be too big or too hard.

For people who suffer from long-term vertigo, if each episode of vertigo is related to changes in body position and is accompanied by a sense of rotation or shaking of visual objects, it is likely to be otolithiasis. You should go to a regular hospital's vertigo diagnosis and treatment center for examination and treatment. Once diagnosed, you should receive treatment as soon as possible.
