Can myopia surgery improve bulging eyes?

Can myopia surgery improve bulging eyes?

Many nearsighted people feel that they have become uglier since they started wearing glasses. When looking in the mirror, they always feel that their eyeballs are bulging outwards. But in fact, the bulging eyes have nothing to do with glasses.

Why do myopic people have bulging eyes?

If the human eye is compared to a camera, parallel light enters through the aperture (pupil), is refracted by the lens (cornea and lens), and finally focuses on the film (retina) to form a clear image.

Most myopia is axial myopia, that is, because the length of the eyeball (eye axis) exceeds the normal value (developing from a nearly circular shape to an elliptical shape), parallel light rays become focused in front of the retina, resulting in unclear vision in the distance.

Generally speaking, the normal axial length of an adult's eye is between 23.5 mm and 24 mm. If it exceeds the normal range, the degree of myopia will increase by 300 degrees for every 1 mm increase. The capacity of our eye sockets is relatively fixed. The eyeball is in the eye socket. If the length of the eyeball (axial length) becomes longer, it will naturally bulge outward!

Bulging eyes are not caused by glasses!

Myopia glasses will not only not cause bulging of the eyeball, but will also delay the phenomenon of bulging of the eyeball to a certain extent. Since the eyeballs of adolescents are still in the developmental stage, accommodative myopia is very likely to develop into axial myopia. Especially for high myopia, the anterior-posterior diameter of the eyeball is significantly extended, which is manifested as bulging of the eyeball. If myopia is corrected by wearing glasses normally from the beginning, this situation will be alleviated or even prevented.

Then why do eyes become smaller after myopia?

Wearing glasses may make your eyes look smaller. This is because if you are nearsighted, you are wearing a concave lens. If you look at your eyes from the front through the glasses, they will appear smaller to a certain extent. The greater the degree of myopia, the smaller the eyes appear. If the degree of glasses on the two eyes is quite different, it will also look like one has different eyes.

Can myopia surgery solve the problem of bulging eyes?

Zhao Bo, director of Tianjin University Aier Eye Hospital, said that laser correction surgery is to make a lens on the cornea to change the corneal curvature, thereby changing the refractive state of the eye to achieve the purpose of correcting myopia. Lens implantation is to correct myopia by implanting an artificial lens in the eye. Neither of these operations has the effect of shortening the eye axis, so the problem of bulging eyes cannot be corrected by myopia surgery.

Generally speaking, the more severe the myopia, the longer the eye axis and the more obvious the bulging of the eyeball. If you want to avoid bulging eyeballs, you need to prevent myopia as early as possible, avoid the further development of high myopia, develop good habits of using your eyes scientifically, and prevent myopia from getting worse.
