0 1The cause of myopia is using the eyes too close:

A large number of epidemiological studies have shown that near visual load is the most important cause of myopia. Near visual load includes using the eyes too close and looking at near objects for too long. The more time you spend reading and working at close range, the faster your myopia progresses.

Too strong or too weak lighting: If the light is too strong, such as sunlight shining on books, it will cause strong reflections and irritate the eyes. On the contrary, if the light is too weak, the books are not well lit, the eyes cannot see the fonts clearly, and the head will move forward and get close to the books. Both of the above situations can easily make the eyes tired, and the eyes will adjust too much or spasm, resulting in myopia.

Using the eyes for too long: Using the eyes for a long time will put too much strain on the eyes. The muscles inside and outside the eyes will be in a tense state for a long time without getting rest. Over time, things will become blurred when looking at distant objects and myopia will develop.

Lack of sleep: When you don’t get enough sleep, you will feel tired and dizzy the next day. Your brain does not get enough rest and fatigue is not eliminated, which increases the burden on your eyes and promotes myopia.

02Are you truly myopic or falsely myopic?

Can't see clearly and has difficulty seeing far away, likes to squint and tilt the head to look at things

When you see these signs of abnormal vision, you should go to the hospital for professional examination in time to clarify your myopia through methods such as mydriasis refraction and measurement of the eye axis.

If the result of the refraction after mydriasis is not myopia, or the degree is significantly lower than before mydriasis, it means that there is "false" myopia caused by excessive adjustment of the ciliary muscle. But in most cases, the change in degree before and after mydriasis will not be very large, at this time, we should pay attention to the occurrence of "true" myopia.

"False" myopia can be cured by resting and relaxing the eyes, or using therapeutic eye drops under the guidance of a doctor, which may help restore vision to a certain extent. However, if it is diagnosed as "true" myopia, you will have to be more careful in the next "road to protecting your eyesight".

Note: Be sure to go to a regular hospital

Unscrupulous businesses will do everything they can to take advantage of the smokescreen of "pseudo" myopia and make a profit by claiming that they can "cure" myopia.

0 3Early prevention, early detection, early intervention

1. Early prevention

Take your child for a comprehensive eye check-up regularly. For example, when the child is 3-11 years old and his visual development is faster, a comprehensive eye check-up should be conducted every 3 months. After the age of 12, when the development is relatively slow, an eye check-up should be conducted every 6 months.

Create a good environment for eye use. For example, when children are doing homework at night, turn on the ceiling light and desk lamp at the same time.

Develop scientific eye habits, such as supervising children to take a 5-10 minute break after using their eyes at close range for 30-40 minutes continuously.

Develop the habit of active outdoor activities and exercise. For example, try to ensure a total of 1-2 hours of outdoor activities every day.

2. Early detection

If the following situations occur, parents should take their children to a professional medical institution as soon as possible to prevent small problems from becoming big problems:

Children often squint and tilt their heads to look at things, and have abnormal eye conditions such as "missing words", "serial writing", and "difficulty in reading";

The child actively informed that he could not see the blackboard or other distant objects clearly;

The school vision screening results indicated that the child had eye abnormalities.

3. Early intervention

Because even if the degree of myopia is the same, the reasons for myopia are different for each person. When a child develops myopia, parents should take the child to a regular medical institution in time and follow the doctor's advice to receive myopia correction according to the child's specific situation to prevent the degree from increasing. Because if it is not corrected in time, the child's eyes will continue to be blurred and tired, which will accelerate the progression of myopia, which is not worth the loss.

Parents should listen to doctors and try not to change/intervene/corrective measures at will. Currently, there are evidence-based medical evidence for correction methods including ordinary frames, specially designed frames, orthokeratology lenses, specially designed soft contact lenses, and low-concentration atropine eye drops. Some merchants tell you that they can "cure" myopia, but in fact, they are all IQ taxes!

Myopia surgery does not cure myopia, but it can help people “remove glasses” through surgery. However, it cannot truly reverse the risk of pathological and structural eye changes caused by myopia.

04Can outdoor activities prevent myopia?

Several studies have found that the longer the time spent outdoors, the lower the incidence of myopia.

Compared with children who frequently engage in outdoor activities, children who spend less time outdoors are 2 to 3 times more likely to be myopic.

Increasing outdoor activity time by 1 hour per week can reduce the risk of myopia by 2%.

Over a period of 1-3 years, an additional 1-2 hours of outdoor activity per day can reduce myopia by 25% to 50%, especially for children under 12 years old.

At the expense of outdoor activities is the time spent indoors/in front of screens. Studies have found that the longer children spend indoors/in front of screens, the higher the incidence of myopia.

When you are outdoors, things around you are farther away, and when you look at distant objects, your ciliary muscles relax;

Indoors, things around us are closer. When looking at close objects, the ciliary muscle tightens and the lens becomes more convex, which induces changes in the shape of the eyeball and accelerates the progression of myopia.

Outdoor sun exposure can promote the body's production of vitamin D, thereby promoting calcium absorption.

Calcium deficiency can weaken the elasticity and surface tension of the eyeball wall and increase the risk of myopia. Studies have shown that myopic people have less calcium and zinc in their serum.
