Let patients no longer have difficulty in eating! Nanhua Hospital successfully carried out CT-guided percutaneous gastrostomy

Recently, Tang Sanyuan, director of the General Internal Medicine and Cancer Prevention and Treatment Center of the Nanhua Hospital affiliated to the University of South China, led a team to successfully perform the first CT-guided percutaneous gastrostomy on a patient with advanced esophageal cancer, successfully rebuilding the nutritional channel for the esophageal cancer patient who had difficulty eating. The successful implementation of this technology marks that the hospital's technical strength in the field of tumor nutritional therapy and minimally invasive surgery has reached a new level.

The patient was unable to eat due to esophageal stenosis and swallowing dysfunction caused by esophageal cancer, so he went to see Dr. Tang Sanyuan's team of Oncology Department 1 of Nanhua Hospital affiliated to University of South China . Through interdisciplinary collaboration (MDT) discussion, Dr. Tang Sanyuan believed that the patient had indications for percutaneous gastrostomy and had no contraindications for interventional procedures, and could undergo CT-guided percutaneous gastrostomy.

After fully respecting the wishes of the patient's family and obtaining their consent, after detailed discussions and surgical plan design, Chief Physician Tang Sanyuan's team successfully performed this innovative surgery on the patient on September 2. The operation went smoothly, with no bleeding or discomfort.

Currently, there are three types of gastrostomy: surgical laparoscopy, gastroscopy, and CT or DSA guidance. Surgical gastrostomy began to be used in clinical practice in the 19th century. Due to the need for general anesthesia, greater trauma and a high incidence of complications, it is no longer the preferred treatment method.

The advantage of percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy is that it can perform endoscopic examination and treatment at the same time, and the operation can be performed under direct gastroscopy. However, the success rate of endoscopic gastrostomy technology is greatly reduced for patients with severe upper gastrointestinal tract stenosis or hiatal hernia.

With the development of interventional technology and instruments, DSA or CT-guided gastrostomy has the advantages of high surgical success rate, less invasiveness, shorter operation time and fewer complications, and is increasingly valued by clinical physicians. CT-guided percutaneous gastrostomy can further improve patients' medical experience while meeting their medical needs.

The success of this CT-guided percutaneous gastrostomy is not only a strong proof of the technical strength of the Cancer Prevention and Treatment Center of the Nanhua Hospital affiliated to the University of South China, but also a vivid manifestation of the hospital's multidisciplinary collaboration and comprehensive diagnosis and treatment model.

Director Tang Sanyuan said that with the continuous advancement of medical technology and the continuous efforts of the team, the Cancer Prevention and Treatment Center of Nanhua Hospital will continue to be committed to providing patients with better-quality and more efficient medical services and safeguarding their health.
