What should you do if you encounter an epileptic seizure? Experts recommend this

What should you do when you encounter an epileptic seizure? Henan Provincial Disease Control experts remind that you should first keep a calm mind, lay the patient on his side, unbutton his shirt, and keep his airway open. Do not forcibly restrict the patient's twitching during convulsions, as forced restriction may cause fractures or injuries.

Secondly, do not put anything in the patient's mouth, and do not take additional anti-epileptic drugs. Some people mistakenly put things in the patient's mouth to prevent the patient from biting his tongue, or even pry open the patient's teeth. This often causes damage or tooth fracture, and broken teeth may cause suffocation or inhalation and secondary lung infection.

It should be noted that when the patient is in automatism, if he is mentally confused, he should not be disturbed. If automatism leads to danger, he should be restricted to a certain extent. For a period of time after the attack, the patient may be confused. Witnesses should stay by the patient's side to observe the condition, such as the starting point of the tic, facial expression, state of consciousness, and whether there is incontinence, etc., until the patient fully recovers. After the patient wakes up, comfort him. If the attack lasts for more than 5 minutes, or there are multiple attacks in succession, and the patient does not regain consciousness during the interval between attacks, he should be sent to the hospital immediately.

Experts say that epilepsy is not scary and that with regular anti-epileptic treatment, the seizures of most patients can be controlled. Even if they need to take medication for life, they can still study, work and live like normal people.
