This is not a "smart hole"! Doctors remind: If this happens to the eyes, you need to see a doctor immediately

"This is not a 'smart hole'! This is called lacrimal sac fistula. If you find it, you need to go to the hospital for treatment in time." In the outpatient department on the second floor of the Aier Eye Hospital affiliated to Wuhan University, Zhang Jiang, director of the lacrimal duct/eye and nose related department, said to the parents of the sick children earnestly.

Liangliang (pseudonym), 6 years old this year, always had tears in his right eye since he was born. At first, his family thought it was because he was young and didn't pay much attention to it. Later, as Liangliang grew up, his grandmother found a small hole like a pinhole in the corner of his right eye. His grandmother excitedly said that this was a "smart hole", which means that the child with it will be smart and rich.

As he got older, Liangliang's tears became more and more serious, and he was about to go to primary school. So his family took him to the Aier Eye Hospital affiliated to Wuhan University.

Zhang Jiang, director of the tear duct/eye and nose related specialist department, received Liangliang's family. After examination, it was found that the small hole in the corner of Liangliang's eye was called a lacrimal sac fistula, which required surgical treatment. "This is not a symbol of intelligence and wealth, but a congenital malformation! There is a needle-sized hole in the skin of the lacrimal sac area, and tears overflow from the hole, which is called a lacrimal sac fistula. This disease can be divided into congenital and acquired. Congenital lacrimal sac fistula is caused by the failure of the facial fissure to close well during the embryo. The facial fissure is separated from the surface epithelium during the embryo and only closes at a later stage. If it cannot close, a fistula is formed." Director Zhang Jiang introduced that congenital lacrimal sac fistulas are mostly infants and young children, often bilateral. The fistula opening is a millet-sized depression hidden in the inner canthus fold. If it is not carefully examined, it is easy to be overlooked. Acquired lacrimal sac fistulas are mostly formed by the rupture of acute dacryocystitis, and the opening is not closed.

Last week, Director Zhang Jiang successfully performed laser closure surgery on Liangliang's right lacrimal sac fistula, and Liangliang finally stopped crying.

Director Zhang Jiang reminded that although tear duct diseases do not directly affect vision, different tear duct diseases require different treatments. Once obvious tearing or eye mucus occurs, do not take medication without authorization, and do not ignore it. You need to see a doctor in time to confirm the cause.
