How to practice serving in tennis How to toss the ball in tennis

Tennis is a ball game and also a sports event. In a tennis match, whether your serve is successful will determine whether you will give the opponent a chance. So you must practice tennis serve well, starting from the very beginning. So how should you practice?

How to practice serving in tennis

First, standardize the movements. Several key points: throwing the ball, holding the racket, and standing position.

1. Tossing: You can practice the stability of tossing alone. Hold the ball in a "wine glass" style, don't hold it too tightly, relax. Whether you are tossing with your left or right hand, the direction is from 11 o'clock to 1 o'clock on the clock face.

2. Grip: Continental grip. Many beginners use the forehand grip to serve, but this grip makes it difficult to control the rotation.

3. Stance: The front foot is at a 30-degree angle to the baseline, and the distance between the front and back feet is almost shoulder-width apart.

Note: Step-up serve or platform serve is a personal choice. Step-up serve can concentrate more power, but the stability is slightly worse. Platform serve has better stability.

After standardizing the movements, you need to practice continuously. It is recommended to put the serve in the middle of your normal training. When practicing the serve, make sure you have sufficient physical strength.

There are three types of tennis serves: flat serve, slice serve and topspin serve. The hitting point of each serve is different. It is recommended to experience the differences in the hitting points of different serves.

For a flat serve, the center of the racket face is aimed straight at the ball, hitting the upper back center of the ball; for a slice serve, the hitting position is slightly to the right of the middle of the ball, and you can feel the side friction between the racket and the ball; for a topspin serve, the racket rubs the back of the ball from bottom to top and brings it out to the right, making the ball produce topspin on the right side. In addition, the tossing position of different serving methods is also different, so you need to pay attention to the distinction.

When training your serve, you need to constantly improve your movements and research new rotations to make progress. Moreover, whether you are a beginner in tennis, a 5.0+ master, or even a professional player, you will practice serving every day, so the practice of serving is endless.

How to toss a tennis ball

Practicing tossing well is the first step to practicing serving well. Stable tossing can also make the hitting point of the serve more stable, thereby improving the stability of the serve. Tossing a good ball will make the ball have a solid force and a precise landing point.

When practicing throwing the ball, you need to experience the feeling of the ball going straight up and down. You can practice next to the fence of the court. In addition, the height of the ball should not be too high or too low. If it is too high, the waiting time for hitting the ball will be too long, and if it is too low, the body will not be able to stretch, making it difficult to concentrate the strength on the ball.

Tennis serve technique

Each technical action consists of four parts: preparation, racket lead, ball hitting, and follow-through. Start with these four parts to develop good ball throwing stability.

At the moment of throwing the ball, swing the racket back, using the elbow as the axis, and hang the forearm, hand, and racket head behind the back in turn. Bend your knees and stretch your body backward. Imagine the whole body as a fully drawn bow. Then kick your legs and turn your body. Use your elbow as the axis to drive the hand and racket head towards the hitting point. Concentrate your strength on this point and hit the ball out!

After hitting the ball, the body leans toward the court, and the racket naturally moves to the left side of the body as the arm swings. The whole process must be done in one go with a relaxed body.
