Haohao (pseudonym), a boy who underwent surgery to treat his strabismus seven years ago but now has strabismus again, found the doctor who performed the surgery on him seven years ago, hoping to correct his strabismus again. Haohao (pseudonym), 11 years old this year, is from Xinzhou, Wuhan. Not long after he was born, his parents discovered that his eyes alternately deviated outward when he looked at things. Because he was still young at the time, he had never received treatment. After going to kindergarten, Haohao was pointed at by other classmates, so his parents took him to find Professor Wang Ping, the leader of the Pediatric Ophthalmology Department of the Eye Center of Tongji Hospital of Huazhong University of Science and Technology. After examination, Haohao was found to have exotropia and hypertrophy of the inferior oblique muscles of both eyes. Professor Wang Ping performed strabismus correction surgery on Haohao, removing 3 mm of the inferior oblique muscle of the right eye and 5 mm of the inferior oblique muscle of the left eye. After the operation, Haohao finally corrected his "slant" and returned to normal. In the past six months, Haohao's left eye suddenly deviated outward. Haohao's family took him to the Aier Eye Hospital affiliated to Wuhan University for treatment. They found Professor Wang Ping, who has become the head of the strabismus and pediatric ophthalmology group of the Aier Eye Hospital Group in Hubei Province. After a detailed examination, Haohao was diagnosed with residual exotropia and needed a second operation. Haohao's parents expressed concerns about the second general anesthesia operation. Professor Wang Ping introduced that at present, Haohao's situation can be considered for partial anesthesia surgery, which can reduce the parents' concerns about the inability to observe and adjust the eye position during general anesthesia surgery. Last week, Professor Wang Ping performed a second strabismus correction surgery on Haohao, and Haohao's left eye is currently recovering well. Why does strabismus occur again? Xu Fei, deputy chief physician of strabismus and pediatric ophthalmology at the Aier Eye Hospital affiliated to Wuhan University, introduced that strabismus surgery is to adjust the eye position and correct strabismus through extraocular muscle surgery. Some children have an ideal eye position when they are discharged from the hospital, but their eyes will deviate again after a period of time. This may be because the visual function of many strabismus patients is not fully restored after surgery to correct strabismus. Although strabismus surgery improves the patient's appearance and corrects the patient's deviated eye position, binocular vision is not established. If scientific and targeted visual training is not carried out in time to restore binocular vision, eye deviation may still occur again in the later stage. She emphasized that after strabismus patients have undergone strabismus correction surgery, they must pay attention to postoperative visual function training. |
