At what degree of myopia does a child need to wear glasses?

Myopia of more than 600 degrees is called high myopia, and its clinical manifestations mainly include decreased vision, eye fatigue, and visual obstruction. Ophthalmologists said that although vision is related to genetics, it is not 100%. For most children, preventing myopia and protecting the eyes in a scientific way are more important.

For example, when it comes to fitting glasses, it is important to prevent and control myopia through scientific methods. Parents can check the following questions by themselves. These are usually the questions that parents are concerned about after their children are diagnosed with true myopia. Director Fu Chengbin of the Optometry Department of Jinan Affiliated Dongguan Aier Eye Hospital will answer them:

1. At what degree of myopia does a child need to wear glasses?

If a child is diagnosed with true myopia and the degree of myopia is ≥100, he or she will need to wear glasses.

For children with myopia less than 100 degrees, the naked eye visual acuity can reach 0.6 for one eye and 0.8 for both eyes. The eye position and binocular vision are normal, so just pay attention to regular check-ups.
It should be noted that before wearing glasses, you must take your child to a professional institution for examination.

Because even for children with 100-degree myopia, there may be several different correction methods. For example, some children have problems with eye position, some have abnormal accommodation, some have high astigmatism, and some have too long eye axis values... Different situations require different optometry prescriptions and glasses prescriptions.

Three principles of eyeglass fitting:

1. The degree must be accurate

2. The image should be clear and the visual effect should be good after wearing.

3. Eyes should be comfortable (i.e. no adverse reactions such as dizziness, eye pain, etc.)

2. Will wearing glasses make your eyesight worse?

After wearing glasses, my eyesight has been getting worse and worse. The glasses say that they are not responsible for this.

Excessive use of eyes and lack of attention to eye hygiene are the reasons for worsening myopia.

If children do not wear glasses in time after developing myopia, they will have to put more effort to see things, which may increase fatigue and tension in the eye muscles, causing myopia to grow faster and may even cause more serious visual problems such as amblyopia and strabismus.

3. Does wearing glasses make your eyes bulge?

The lengthening of the eye axis and the increase in myopia are the culprits for bulging eyes, not glasses.

The longer the eye axis and the deeper the myopia, the further the eyeball grows forward. This is why people with severe myopia are more likely to have their eyes bulging forward.

4. Is there any way to alleviate the worsening of myopia?

Orthokeratology lenses, defocused RGP lenses, and multifocal soft contact lenses can help alleviate myopia. They can also help children alleviate myopia through visual function training. To determine which method is suitable for your child, you need to go to a professional medical institution for an examination and have a professional doctor give you a reasonable plan.

Kind tips

Regular eye examinations are important for preventing and controlling myopia in children. It is recommended that adolescents and children have an eye examination at least once a year, and by observing changes in the child's eye axis and refractive power, medical intervention measures can be adjusted in an individualized manner.
