Does wearing glasses really make your eyes bulge?

Friends who are nearsighted must have experienced this: wearing glasses makes the eyes look smaller, and the higher the degree of myopia, the smaller the eyes appear. Some people even feel that their eyes become more bulging. The rumor that wearing glasses will make the eyes bulge is getting more and more intense. Many parents are reluctant to let their children wear glasses for the sake of their children's appearance. Is this rumor true?

Why do my eyes become smaller when I wear myopia glasses?

In fact, our eyes have not really become smaller. The human eye is like a camera, which can adjust the focal length according to the distance of the object being viewed and focus the light on the retina. If myopic patients want to see things clearly again, they need to intervene in the refraction of the refractive system, that is, add a concave lens such as glasses in front of the eyes to move the image backward. However, since the concave lens itself has the function of shrinking objects, looking at the eyes through thick lenses will naturally make the eyes feel much smaller.

Does wearing glasses really make your eyes bulge?

Zhu Lina, director of Tianjin University Aier Eye Hospital, said that wearing glasses does not actually cause the eyes to bulge. The reason why the eyeballs become bulging is due to the growth of the eye axis. Generally speaking, the higher the degree of myopia and the longer the eye axis, the greater the possibility of eyeball bulging. The eye axis of patients with high myopia is longer than that of people with moderate or low myopia and healthy vision, so the eyes may appear slightly protruding, which will give the illusion of sunken eye sockets.

Warm reminder: If your child has myopia problems, parents must pay attention to it. Not allowing your child to wear glasses may aggravate visual fatigue and accelerate the development of your child's myopia.
