How to identify poisonous mushrooms? Why are beautiful mushrooms poisonous?

Mushrooms are a type of fungus, which can be roughly divided into edible and inedible. Inedible mushrooms are mostly poisonous. Everyone will say that beautiful mushrooms are poisonous, but this statement is a bit one-size-fits-all. So how do you identify poisonous mushrooms?

How to identify poisonous mushrooms

Look at the color, secretions, smell and other aspects. Non-toxic fungi are mostly light yellow, earthy yellow, tea green, and light brown. Toxic fungi are mainly bright colors such as white and red. The brighter the color, the more suspicious it is. If the wound secretes milky white liquid with a foul odor when the mushroom is broken, it is mostly poisonous fungi.

Look at the growing environment. If it grows under a tree, the environment is dry and normal, and there are even signs of insects eating it, it is mostly non-toxic fungus. On the contrary, if the environment is humid and dark, and there are no insects biting it, it is mostly poisonous fungus.

In fact, whether mushrooms are edible depends mainly on experience. Once you are familiar with local mushrooms, there will be no problems. Therefore, the best way is to only eat those you know.

Why are beautiful mushrooms poisonous?

It is actually a misunderstanding that things with beautiful colors are poisonous, and things with ugly colors are not poisonous.

You can't judge whether a mushroom is poisonous or not based on color alone. Because many brightly colored wild mushrooms, such as Boletus, Red Agaricus, and Chanterelles, are non-toxic and edible. Especially the Euphorbia genus, which has the most poisonous mushroom species; and the orange-capped Amanita, although brightly colored, is a famous and delicious edible mushroom. The most poisonous and deadly Amanita phalloides in Guangdong is pure white, and many people mistakenly believe that it is non-toxic.
