Don’t play with your phone after turning off the lights, be careful of glaucoma!

Nowadays, it is common to use mobile phones before going to bed. Some people even like to watch TV series or videos in the dark with the lights off. However, this habit has a great impact on the eyes. Staring at the computer or mobile phone screen for a long time in the dim light can not only cause myopia, but also induce an irreversible blinding eye disease - glaucoma.

What is glaucoma?

Glaucoma is an irreversible blinding eye disease caused by a long-term, slow increase in intraocular pressure that exceeds the limit that the optic nerve can tolerate, resulting in the gradual loss of optic nerve fibers and the loss of the function of transmitting external information, leading to loss of visual field and ultimately blindness.

Using a cell phone in the dark can harm your eyes

Intraocular pressure is an important factor in maintaining the normal shape and optical integrity of the eyeball. When playing with mobile phones in the dark, the pupils in the eyes will dilate and the relevant muscles of the eyes will become tense, which can easily cause fluctuations or even increases in intraocular pressure, and may induce an acute attack of glaucoma. Therefore, there are many patients who suffer from visual fatigue, decreased vision, and dry eyes.

The correct way to use your phone

Director Li Fuhua of Tianjin University Aier Eye Hospital said that using electronic products in a dark environment for a long time can easily cause eye fatigue and increased intraocular pressure, thereby inducing glaucoma. It is recommended to leave a light on when using the phone before going to bed. Also, do not lie on your side to play with the phone. At the same time, avoid staying up late for long periods of time using mobile phones and other electronic products. Long-term excessive use of the eyes can also lead to increased intraocular pressure.

Since the visual impairment caused by glaucoma is irreversible, early prevention, early detection and early treatment are particularly important. If you find symptoms such as eye swelling, eye pain, acute vision loss, unexplained migraine, nausea, etc., you should seek medical attention in time.
