It is said that drinking tea is good for cardiovascular health and reduces the risk of diabetes. So how does a cup of tea affect the body? A recently published study found that drinking tea can increase urinary sugar excretion and improve insulin resistance!

Drink a cup of dark tea every day, reduce the risk of diabetes by 47% In October 2023, researchers from the Zhongda Hospital affiliated to Southeast University in my country released a latest study at the 2023 European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) Annual Meeting. The study showed that compared with people who never drink tea, people who drink dark tea every day have a 47% lower risk of type 2 diabetes and a 53% lower risk of prediabetes.

The study found that:

Compared with those who do not drink tea, those who drink tea every day have an increase of 0.11 mmol/mmol in urinary glucose excretion, a decrease of 0.23 in the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index for assessing insulin resistance, a 34% decrease in the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, and a 39% decrease in the risk of prediabetes.

When analyzing tea by type, the researchers found:

Drink black tea, these benefits are more obvious!

Drinking black tea was associated with an increase of 0.16 mmol/mmol in glucose excretion in urine and a decrease of 0.31 in triglyceride-glucose (TyG), which assesses insulin resistance. Compared with people who never drink tea, people who drink black tea every day have a 47% lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes and a 53% lower risk of developing prediabetes.

In addition, previous studies have found that drinking tea can help reduce the risk of diabetes.

Drinking at least four cups of tea a day is associated with a 10% lower risk of type 2 diabetes, according to research results presented at the 2022 European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) Annual Meeting.

The meta-study involved more than 1.07 million participants, and the results showed that for every additional cup of tea consumed per day, the risk of developing type 2 diabetes decreased by about 1%.

Compared with people who hardly drink tea:

People who drank 1-3 cups of tea a day had a 4% lower risk of developing diabetes; when they drank 4 cups or more a day, the risk of developing diabetes was reduced by 17%.
