Beware of the recent high incidence of "heat stroke"! Doctors teach you three ways to deal with it

Although the beginning of autumn has passed, the "autumn heat" is still fierce and the high temperature "barbecue mode" is still continuing. In just one week, the neurosurgery department of Ningbo Second Hospital admitted three elderly patients suffering from "heat stroke".

"People know that winter is the peak season for stroke. In fact, high temperatures can easily induce cerebrovascular accidents. Even if middle-aged and elderly people are in good health on weekdays, they should not take it lightly," said Chen Feiyu, deputy director of the Department of Neurosurgery at Ningbo Second Hospital.

An octogenarian suffered a sudden stroke at home

Hot weather can easily lead to dehydration and heat stroke

Ms. Zhang accompanied her mother to the hospital. Although her mother was over 80 years old, she had always been in good health, able to take care of herself in daily life and had a regular lifestyle. Therefore, Ms. Zhang was very relieved about her mother's health.

Ms. Zhang went on a business trip some time ago and called her mother several times, but none of the calls went through. "At first I thought the old lady went to the park to chat, play cards, or go shopping, and she didn't bring her phone with her, so I planned to call her at another time." Ms. Zhang said, but after several consecutive calls failed, she became alert and quickly contacted the local fire rescue department.

After the firefighters broke the door, they saw an old man lying on the ground. The firefighters quickly carried the old man to Ningbo Second Hospital. After emergency treatment, the old man was diagnosed with a large area of cerebral infarction on the right side of the brain. However, due to the late discovery, the time window for thrombectomy and thrombolysis had been lost.

"Many patients think that stroke is more common in winter. In fact, 'sauna days' are also a big challenge to the cerebrovascular system of the elderly. There are two peak periods for stroke, one is the cold winter below 0℃, and the other is the midsummer above 32℃. The stroke that occurs at this time is commonly known as 'heat stroke'." Chen Feiyu introduced that on hot days, the human body will sweat a lot in order to regulate body temperature. If the water is not replenished at this time, it is easy to cause "dehydration". "Dehydration" will reduce blood volume, increase blood viscosity, slow blood flow, and increase the risk of ischemic stroke. It is recommended that the elderly "drink small amounts frequently" in summer, replenish water in time, and prevent blood concentration; in addition, avoid greedy coolness in summer, because when the two environments change from cold to hot, the human body will have a stress response and blood vessels will contract.

"We have also noticed that many of the three elderly people who have been admitted to the hospital recently are in good health on weekdays. We would like to remind the elderly and their families that even if they are in good health, they should be careful and not take it lightly," said Chen Feiyu.

After several days of treatment, the old man has regained consciousness and his right limb muscle strength has returned to normal. He still has some slurred speech and left hemiplegia and will soon go to a rehabilitation center for further treatment.

My uncle suddenly fell to the ground while working in the fields.

Due to timely treatment, there are no sequelae.

Although he also suffered a heat stroke, 70-year-old Uncle Li was much luckier.

On the morning of August 19, Uncle Li was working in the fields as usual when he suddenly felt dizzy and fell to the ground, losing consciousness. "At first I thought he had a heat stroke, so I pinched his Ren Zhong point. We knew that Uncle Li was in good health, had no high blood pressure or heart disease, and we didn't think it was a stroke. It was only after he was sent to the local hospital that we realized it might be a stroke," said a companion who was working in the fields.

After being transferred to Ningbo Second Hospital, Uncle Li received further examinations and was diagnosed with cerebral stroke. He was urgently admitted to the neurosurgery department for treatment. Thanks to the timely discovery, Uncle Li recovered well after treatment, was conscious, had full muscle strength, and had no sequelae. "I didn't expect to recover so well!" Uncle Li's daughter said happily.

The reason why Uncle Li had such an ideal prognosis was that he was diagnosed in time and seized the golden period for stroke rescue. The treatment of stroke requires every second to count. The best time for intravenous thrombolysis or thrombectomy for ischemic stroke is within 4.5 to 9 hours. Exceeding the golden period for rescue will lead to serious sequelae such as paralysis.

"Early identification of stroke is very important. After an ischemic stroke occurs, approximately 1.9 million brain cells die every minute. But if early identification can be achieved and the patients are sent to a medical institution with the ability to treat stroke patients as soon as possible within the onset time window and receive standardized treatment, most patients can recover significantly." Chen Feiyu reminded that the earlier a stroke is discovered and diagnosed, the better the treatment and rehabilitation effects will be.

Finally, Dr. Chen reminded us to identify the early symptoms of stroke and remember the "120" three-step identification method:

1 Look: An asymmetrical face with crooked mouth corners

2 Check: 2 arms, unilateral weakness, unable to lift

0Listen: Slurred speech

If any of the above symptoms occur suddenly, it can be preliminarily diagnosed as a stroke. You need to call the emergency number 120 immediately and send the patient to the hospital for emergency treatment as quickly as possible.
