Health Science: Do you know how to use topical ointments effectively?

The skin is one of the largest organs in our body and the outermost protective barrier. However, we often encounter various skin problems in our lives, such as inflammation, allergies, infections, etc. In the face of common skin problems, the most common ointments we come into contact with are creams, ointments, gels, lotions, etc.

Many people buy topical ointments and use them directly based on their own experience. In fact, the correct use of topical ointments is a very critical part of the treatment process. Different dosage forms of topical ointments have different effects, and the way of use should be changed accordingly.

1. Aqueous solution usually has cleansing, astringent, anti-inflammatory and antipruritic effects, and can be used by flushing, wiping and wet compress.

2. Ointments are usually used for anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic drugs or skin moisturizing. Just apply to the affected area when using.

3. Powder: It can be used to lubricate the skin and absorb exudate from skin lesions. It can be sprinkled directly on the affected area or on the surface of the paste to protect its adhesion.

4. Lotion is a mixture of powder and water, which has the effects of relieving itching, dissipating heat, drying and protecting.

5. Tincture is an alcohol solution of non-volatile drugs, suitable for superficial skin lesions without erosion or ulceration.

6. Gel is a commonly used external drug dosage form that can be applied to the affected area. Depending on the drug, it can be used for acute or chronic damage.

Different dosage forms of drugs usually have different permeabilities, and the skin in different parts of the body is also different. For thin and tender skin such as skin folds, it is usually necessary to choose a dosage form with mild effects and no strong irritation. On the contrary, if the skin lesions are located in thicker skin parts such as palms and toes, it is necessary to choose a dosage form with higher permeability.

Of course, topical skin medications are only effective if they are chosen correctly. You should follow the doctor's advice and choose the appropriate type of ointment according to different skin problems, such as antifungal drugs for fungal infections, antibiotic ointments for bacterial infections, antihistamine topical medications for allergic reactions, and anti-inflammatory drugs for eczema .
