Is summer not a good time to have cataract surgery? What do experts say?

Every summer, I always hear this question: It's so hot in summer and we sweat a lot. Will cataract surgery easily lead to infection? Why not wait until the weather is cooler? Is this idea correct?

Cataract surgery is possible in the summer!

In fact, the main concern about having surgery in the summer is that the weather is hot, sweating can easily lead to infection, and recovery will be slow. But in fact, cataract surgery can be performed in any season.

From the perspective of cataract surgery, there is no season restriction. In the early postoperative care, water should be avoided from entering the eyes, and postoperative eye drops should be used on time and in the prescribed amount according to the doctor's instructions. Regardless of spring, summer, autumn or winter, cataract surgery can be performed as long as the conditions are met.

Can cataract surgery be delayed?

Hua Xia, president of Tianjin University Aier Eye Hospital, said that cataracts are a common cause of visual impairment and blindness. During the expansion period of cataracts, the expansion of the lens causes an increase in the contents of the eye and crowding of the anterior chamber. For some people, the iris is pushed by the lens and accumulates in the angle of the chamber, causing secondary glaucoma, eye swelling and eye pain. If it lasts too long, it will cause irreversible damage to the optic nerve. Cataracts that enter the mature stage are even more likely to cause blindness. Therefore, the later the intervention, the greater the risk.

In addition, because the summer sunlight is strong, the pupil of the human eye will shrink, and the decline in visual quality caused by cataracts will be more obvious. If no intervention is taken, it will affect the quality of life.

Therefore, surgery should not be delayed due to weather reasons. It is recommended to perform cataract surgery before vision is significantly impaired, which can significantly reduce the possibility of blindness.
