Glucose is the most widely distributed and important monosaccharide in nature. It is a polyhydroxy aldehyde. Pure glucose is a colorless crystal, sweet but not as sweet as sucrose, easily soluble in water, slightly soluble in ethanol, and insoluble in ether. It is mostly used clinically for energy supplementation. Glucosamine is a natural amino monosaccharide, which is necessary for the synthesis of proteoglycans in the matrix of human joint cartilage and is known as a "joint lubricant protector". It is formed by replacing one hydroxyl group of glucose with an amino group. It is easily soluble in water and hydrophilic solvents, including glucosamine hydrochloride and glucosamine sulfate. Therefore, glucosamine is not the same as glucose! |
