After a few midnight snacks a week

Ningbo man felt pain like being cut by a knife in the middle of the night

Last week, Mr. Le (pseudonym), who is in his 40s, was invited by his friends to eat several meals of crayfish and beer. As he drank the wine, he forgot about his high uric acid level.

A few days later, in the middle of the night, Mr. Le was awakened by a knife-like pain. He touched his big toe joint and found it was slightly hot. When he got up in the morning, his toes were red and swollen, and it was painful to step on the ground. So he went to the internal medicine clinic of the Baifeng Street Community Health Service Center in Beilun District, Ningbo for treatment.

After a series of examinations, Dr. Xu Panggang diagnosed Mr. Le with gouty arthritis, and the crayfish + beer + irregular work and rest schedule were the culprits.

Why do beer and crayfish cause gout?

Gout is a metabolic disease caused by purine metabolism disorder. Due to abnormal purine metabolism in the body, the uric acid concentration in the blood increases, and the uric acid crystals are deposited in the bone joints, leading to the occurrence of gouty arthritis. The most commonly affected joint is the first metatarsophalangeal joint.

"Crayfish is rich in nutrients such as protein, iron, and calcium, but it is a high-purine food. Excessive intake of purine will lead to increased blood uric acid levels. Beer contains a large amount of malt, which is also a high-purine food. On the other hand, the alcohol in beer stimulates and excites muscle nerves, increases lactic acid in the body, and inhibits the kidney's excretion of uric acid. Coupled with irregular work and rest such as staying up late for a long time, immunity is reduced. Under the combined influence of these factors, uric acid in the human body increases, which in turn induces gout attacks." Dr. Xu introduced that in May and June every year, after crayfish are put on the market on a large scale, it will enter a high incidence period of gout. Recently, he has received several such patients, and the causes of the disease are similar to Mr. Le.

Doctor's reminder

Do these things to stay away from gout complications

Although crayfish is delicious, you should not eat too much. Gout patients should be careful to eat in moderation and limit the intake of high-purine foods and alcohol. High-purine foods include all kinds of seafood, animal offal, thick broth, beans, mushrooms, etc.

In addition, gout patients should avoid excessive intake of fried foods, spicy foods, coffee, strong tea, carbonated drinks and other beverages, and try to quit smoking and drinking. Drinking water can promote the body's metabolism, speed up the excretion of uric acid in the kidneys, and help reduce the level of uric acid in the body.

In terms of life, we should maintain a positive and optimistic attitude, adjust our unhealthy lifestyle, avoid staying up late, avoid overwork, develop a good and regular life schedule, and ensure adequate sleep every day. We can also do some physical exercise, control weight gain, and enhance our immunity.

Take medications on time, monitor blood uric acid levels regularly, understand your own physical condition, and perform CT or X-ray examinations when necessary to assess the progression of the disease in joints and other lesions.
