The penicillin skin test is currently the fastest, most sensitive and economical method to predict penicillin immediate allergic reactions, and can effectively reduce the risk of serious life-threatening reactions such as anaphylactic shock in patients.

Those with a positive penicillin skin test should not use penicillins. However, penicillin skin tests in my country are affected by many factors, such as nurse operation, patient skin problems, disease status, etc., resulting in nearly half of penicillin skin tests being false positives in clinical practice. Patients who have had a positive skin test but have not had an allergic reaction are not considered to be allergic to penicillins in the true sense. They can be retested before using them again to determine whether they can be used. In addition, the specific IgE antibodies in the human body that cause penicillin allergic reactions will decay over time. 50% of those who have allergic reactions will no longer be allergic within 5 years, and 80% will no longer be allergic within 10 years. These patients can undergo another skin test a few years later to re-evaluate whether penicillins can be used.
