Sun Zhong, deputy chief physician and deputy director of the Glaucoma Department of Wuhan University Aier Eye Hospital , said that when watching movies in the cinema, people are often in a completely dark environment. During the 1-2 hour long viewing period, the pupil is dilated for a long time, which leads to increased intraocular pressure, insufficient blood supply to the eye, and inability of the aqueous humor to flow normally in front and behind the eye, which can easily cause acute glaucoma. If the patient is hyperopic, the axial length of the eye is shorter than that of normal people, the intraocular pressure is easily increased, and staying in the dark room for too long is more likely to induce acute glaucoma.

Three symptoms indicate glaucoma ✦

◾ Unexplained vision loss, especially for those with high myopia, who often still experience headaches and eye swelling after wearing glasses.

◾ When you are emotionally excited or stay in a dark place for too long, you will feel eye swelling, headache, blurred vision, and a layer of fog in front of your eyes.

◾ Colorful halos appear when you look at lights at night, just like a rainbow after rain, which is called iridescence in medicine. This is caused by changes in corneal refraction due to increased intraocular pressure and corneal edema. This is a very special symptom of glaucoma and should be taken seriously.

Things to note for glaucoma patients during the Spring Festival ✦

◾ Keep your emotions stable and your mentality calm, don't be too happy or too sad, stay calm when encountering unpleasant things, and don't be anxious or angry. Countless cases have proved that anxiety and anger can cause a sharp increase in intraocular pressure. If not treated in time, you may become blind within a few hours.

◾ Try not to stay in dark places and do not wear sunglasses, because the pupil will dilate physiologically in dim light, and the root of the iris will easily block the anterior chamber angle, affecting the discharge of aqueous humor from the trabeculae, causing increased intraocular pressure.

◾ Mainly eat light food, eat until you are 80% full, eat some vegetables and fruits appropriately, eat some sweet potatoes every day, keep the bowel movements smooth, develop the habit of regular bowel movements once a day, and prevent constipation, because constipation cannot eliminate waste and toxins in the body in time, and you have to hold your breath and force to defecate, which can increase intraocular pressure.

◾ Avoid working with your head down for long periods of time, and use a slightly higher pillow when sleeping to prevent congestion in the head from causing increased intraocular pressure.
