GSMA: Asia Pacific Mobile Economy Report 2024

GSMA released the "2024 Asia Pacific Mobile Economy Report". The mobile industry continues to support the rapid digital transformation in the Asia Pacific region, and advanced mobile networks provide innovative use cases for consumers and businesses. As governments increasingly use digital technologies to solve some of the most pressing social and economic challenges, the role of mobile infrastructure and services will become more important to the way society operates.

By the end of 2023, 1.8 billion people in Asia Pacific will subscribe to mobile services. The growth in mobile internet penetration has been very significant, reaching 63% of the population. 51% of the region’s population uses mobile internet, equivalent to more than 1.4 billion users, almost three times as many as a decade ago.

Key trends shaping the mobile ecosystem

5G: Focus shifts to 5G Advanced and 5G Low Capacity

Commercial 5G standalone (SA) networks are currently deployed in seven countries in the Asia Pacific region (Australia, India, Japan, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea and Thailand), providing opportunities for the development of new 5G applications. Operators in the region are looking to leverage 5G Advanced and 5G Low Capacity (RedCap) technologies to provide new solutions for enterprises.

Open Gateway: Operators unite to drive API development

Although public network APIs have been available for some time, operators have struggled to adopt a standardized approach to achieve scale. Recent initiatives in the mobile industry have sought to provide new impetus for the development of a common set of network APIs. As of April 2024, 49 operator groups have signed the GSMA Open Gateway Agreement, representing 240 mobile networks and 65% of global mobile connections.

Satellite and NTN: The driving force behind in-flight connectivity

Due to the geographical composition of multiple countries in the Asia-Pacific region, air connectivity will play an important role in achieving universal connectivity.

GenAI: Operators seek revenue opportunities

Operators in Asia Pacific are harnessing the power of generative artificial intelligence (genAI) to drive internal transformation and seize new revenue streams through AI investments.

Consumer trust: Stakeholders take steps to strengthen cybersecurity

As cyber threats against individuals and businesses increase, consumer trust in digital services is likely to erode.
