TechInsights: Smartphone market share in China, the US and Latin America in Q3 2023

TechInsights Wireless Smartphone Strategy (WSS) Service recently released a research report titled "Global Smartphone Manufacturer Share by Region in Q3 2023", which pointed out that in Q3 2023, although the global smartphone market size decreased by 0.3% year-on-year, smartphone shipments in Central America and Latin America (CALA) grew strongly by 14.2% year-on-year. As the global economy began to slow, the smartphone market in the region performed better than the world. Since the region is the home base of many emerging smartphone markets, the results of the unsaturated smartphone market are more obvious than those of some saturated smartphone markets. In addition, Chinese brands have grown at double-digit and triple-digit rates in the region, driving this growth.

Samsung topped the list with 33% market share, followed by Motorola (18%). In a year-over-year comparison, Samsung's performance was flat year-over-year. In all six regions tracked by TechInsights, Samsung ranked first in three regions, ranked in the top three in five regions, and ranked in the top five in all six regions. This makes Samsung a truly global brand. A diverse product portfolio has helped Samsung maintain its dominance in the region since 2010.

Latin America has long been Motorola's most popular region. The region accounts for nearly 50% of Motorola's global shipments. Its E and G series have helped the vendor consolidate its position in Latin America. The Edge and Razr series have helped boost its brand equity.

After the first wave of the COVID-19 outbreak, Xiaomi 's online sales in the region surged, surpassing Apple from the previous quarter and entering the top three in Q3 2023. Xiaomi's shipments in the region increased by 40% year-on-year, driven by attractive product specifications and aggressive pricing.

Apple and Transsion (driven by Tecno and Infinix) rounded out the top 5. Special mentions go to Honor and Realme , which, although not in the top 5, had impressive growth during the quarter.

The top five vendors accounted for more than 85% of shipments in the region in Q3 2023. Chinese vendors accounted for more than 50% of smartphone shipments in the region.

Long-tail brands account for about 2% of total shipments.
