TrendForce: Global smartphone production continues to decline by about 6.6% in Q2 2023, reaching only 270 million units

According to TrendForce, after the global smartphone production in the first quarter decreased by nearly 20% year-on-year, the production in the second quarter continued to decline by about 6.6%, only 270 million units. The total smartphone production in the first half of 2023 will be 520 million units, a decrease of 13.3% compared with the same period last year. Whether it is a single quarter or the first half of the year, it has set a new low record in the past ten years.

Samsung still topped the production rankings, with a total of 53.9 million units produced in the second quarter, a decrease of 12.4% from the previous quarter. Affected by competitors and global economic headwinds, as well as the fading halo of Samsung's flagship phones in the first half of the year, the production performance in the second quarter was not as good as the same period last year. Even if a new foldable phone is released in the third quarter, its sales scale will be smaller than that of the Galaxy S series, and its contribution to the overall production growth will be limited.

The second quarter was the period when Apple switched from old to new models, so it was the quarter with the lowest production performance among the four quarters, with an output of 42 million units, a decrease of 21.2% from the previous quarter. The poor yield of CIS (CMOS Image Sensor) of the new iPhone 15/15 Plus in the third quarter will affect the production performance of this quarter.

It is worth noting that Samsung and Apple are quite close in their forecasts for total production numbers for the whole year. If the iPhone 15 series performs better than market expectations, it may overtake Samsung to become the brand with the largest market share in the world.

Xiaomi produced about 35 million units in the second quarter, up 32.1% from the previous quarter. OPPO (including Oppo, Realme, and OnePlus) produced about 33.6 million units in the second quarter, up 25.4% from the previous quarter.

The most obvious change in the second quarter was that Transsion overtook Vivo and entered the fifth place in the world for the first time , with its production volume increasing by more than 70% month-on-month to 25.1 million units.
