Apptopia & Sensor Tower: Oculus apps have been downloaded 2 million times since the 2021 Christmas holiday

According to new data from third-party app intelligence firms Apptopia and Sensor Tower, Meta’s Oculus app, a mobile companion for Oculus VR devices including the Quest 2, has been downloaded roughly 2 million times worldwide since Christmas. There are already some signs that the Quest 2 is a popular holiday gift, as the Oculus app debuted at the top of Apple’s App Store on Christmas Day and became the most popular free app on Google Play in the US.

Data from Sensor Tower shows that in the week of Christmas in the United States (December 23-29), downloads of the Oculus app soared 517% from the week before, reaching 1.5 million installations. In the following week (December 30-January 5), the number of app installations dropped to 345,000, a 77% drop from the previous week. But this number is still 42% higher than the week before Christmas in 2021. And these newer downloads may still include those who recently received new Oculus devices during the holidays but have not had time to set them up.

While the U.S. accounted for the bulk of post-Christmas installs, App Intelligence estimates that the app has been installed around 2 million times globally across the App Store and Google Play between Christmas and now. Sensor Tower is a bit more conservative in its estimates here, saying that the app has been installed around 1.8 million times globally between December 31, 2021 and January 5, 2022. Meanwhile, Apptopia reports that the Oculus app has been downloaded 2.189 million times worldwide between Christmas and now. It notes that of those 2 million-plus installs, around 79% (or 1.727 million) were attributed to U.S. consumers.

The Oculus app launched in April 2018 and had 1.2 million downloads in its first year, then 2.4 million in 2019. Things got better in 2020, when 4.4 million consumers worldwide installed the app, according to Apptopia. In 2021, the Oculus app benefited from the fall 2020 launch of Quest 2, with installations jumping to 10.62 million. Of those installations, the United States accounted for 7.218 million, or 68%.
